Understanding kleinulator

Post by soje »

I bought a G-major really cheap on the net, and need a buffered loop for my D-clone.

I have a d-lator in the planning, but it's somewhere in the future and I have parts on hand to whip up a Kleinulator.

As sugested on this forum I'm planning on running the kleinulator in series mode, but the circuit raises a question:

When in series mode, are you not slamming the sh* out of the poor jfet in the gain stage, unless input levels (master on the dumble) is turned way down?

no, I don't think so.

Have you checked out the manual?

Thanks for your reply!

yes I have read thru that manual, however I believe that is focused on a kleinulator without the series/parallel switch.

If a J201 has been used for the gain stage, is it reasonable to asume the input sensitivity is around +/- 0.75V?

Sorry, I haven't seen one with a series/ parallel switch.

There is no mention of that in the manual I posted.

I built a tube buffered Dumbleator and use it in series mode with a TC Electronics G Sharp plus my pedal board with no issues.

Yep, that's why the original version no longer uses only a 9v supply. They are easily overdriven, but if you increase the supply voltage it makes a world of difference. The newer version(no layout link posted) has a different style power supply. It uses a uses a charge pump IC to get the voltage up around 33V. I built one at 36V, experimented up to 41V and it seemed to work great.

I had layouts of a series/parallel and the new PS version on an external drive but it crashed awhile back. :(

If I just had to build a solid state one, I would build the higher voltage version. My first pick would be the tube version though.

The tube version (d-lator) is definately in the plans, however I really want to get started playing around with the G-major :-)

May I ask which j-fets you used in your klein? I have a 30V adapter from a HP inkjet, so I'll definately get the volts up there. I was trying to sim the cicuit, and play around with the values and different j-fets.

Using the 2N3819 gave more headroom. I wanted to try the sims with the MPF102, but I couldn't find a spice model. There's also the issue with max ratings. The two mentioned j-fets have a max Vdg of 25V

Have you tried the G Major just plugged into the passive jacks on the amp?

Try short patch cables with the G Major sitting on top of the amp, it may sound fine.

IIRC, a Fairchild J201.......... most definitely a J201 though.

Just keep in mind that you will always be tethered to that 30V wall wart. Whereas, if you use the charge pump circuit you can power it from a commonly found 9V pedalboard wall wart.
