Dogears, 100k Audio vs Linear pots @ OD Drive and Master
I swapped out the 1ooK audio pots to linears, and the only difference is in the gain slope, but still useable. A voltage divider is a voltage divider, what am I missing here?

That's the only difference you'll see.BobW wrote:I swapped out the 1ooK audio pots to linears, and the only difference is in the gain slope, but still useable. A voltage divider is a voltage divider, what am I missing here?

Fung Shai
Also, the resistive element in the linears is rated for higher wattage. Maybe less noise? Doubtful though, but all things being equal, the visual setting change and knowing it is more robust is good for me. And good for the big guy......

Nah...
The big guy did it because audio 100K's were no where to be found in the 70's.And good for the big guy......

Err... The audio tapers are rated for less wattage. Check the data sheets. Obviously we don't need wattage, but the thicker resistive cross-section on the linear is there. Not saying it is noticeable.... But, in any event, I HATED audio tapers in my amps. No gain until past noon..... Bleh

Yep, 1/2 watt for linear, 1/4 watt for audio but since we need like .0001 watt watt's the difference? In either case we have about 100 times the carbon that we have in a carbon from resistor of the same rating.dogears wrote:Err... The audio tapers are rated for less wattage. Check the data sheets.
But most important is that I swapped the pots, then back then in then back...... and couldn't tell the difference if the pots were set at the same resistance. Other component changes are dramatic, Vishay to xicon resistors, poly to MPP, all make a big difference.

I kinda like that.... CRANK IT!!!!Looks better on 10 than 2.
Actually I like the finer control you have at lower gain settings.

thanks guys, the linears were just hanging there as test but installed em last night.
Re: Dogears, 100k Audio vs Linear pots @ OD Drive and Master
Just to be clear, I never cared about the wattage issue. Never tried it even. It is however just an secondary fact in favor of linear. Its all about the knob setting to me. Fung Shai I like the linear as the setting range I like is 10 to 2.

Me too. But I like Wang Chung, not Fung Shai so I use audio.dogears wrote:Its all about the knob setting to me. Fung Shai I like the linear as the setting range I like is 10 to 2.
