Great Dumble-ish tones on TV tonight

On "Dancing with the stars" of all places

My wife and daughter DVR'd it and I heard Santana was on. I watched just to see Carlos. He had some of the best guitar tones I've heard from him in years. No amp heads in sight but the tone was very Dumble like. Oye Como Va tone cut like a knife, but had that big fat low mid Dumble signature. Left me wondering of the Bludotone was off stage.

Thanks for that. It's 9:00PM in CA and I just tuned in and saw Santana's "Oye Como Va," just as I finished reading your post. Good thing he opened the show, so that I didn't have to see the entire show to catch the band! I do believe the tone was less muddy than I remember it being, and while it didn't seem paticularly Dumbley to me, it was good. The one thing that was definitely missing from the sound, that I always expect from Carlos, was the sustain; there was none. Carlos looks more and more like Clapton... nice pot belly! Ha ha. Love them both.

It seemed early dumble to me, Lindey like in brightness and warmth. Yes, Carlos was not letting the notes sing out but his phrasing was spot on.

He did play later with some other singers but as typical, they sing, he piddles on the guitar, not what I want to see.

I don't think so, he had 3 cabs on stage next to him, just the head was missing.

I peeped a Boogie combo on stage at one point. My wife is a big DWTS fan. The "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" thing sounded 70's Dumbly to me - India Arie cut head on that. Never missing an opportunity to relive the good ol' days - I did a gig with Santana and Marshall Tucker Band in the late 70's or early 80's. Marshall Tucker was the headliner!? They gave Carlos a 10 gallon hat to wear on the gig. It was a hoot - literally.......

He most likely had his full rig. It was probably the Mark I and Bludo at the same time. No reason for it to not be. Full band setup. THerefore, full rig.

Yep. Watched the whole thing as it was on. In fact, I have it DVRed. I can go check it again.

I think it was the Bludo and Mesa together. Not sure why there was a sustain issue. Maybe cab phasing and micing issue? Not sure.... Maybe Brandon will chime in. The Bludos are high voltage Bluesmasters. Much different tone when cranked and also depending on trimmer setting.

Damn, who cares about the amp when he sounds that good! Totally in the pocket, and making every note count like always. What a fantastic player! Pure emotion. Where he plays is what makes him so great and unique. His phrasing is always syncopated and not where most guys play. In any case, the tone was excellent IMO, and sounded like vintage Santana Mesa Boogie.

Cool, but if Carlos would just get a good guitar, even his old sg smokes the tone of that junk, just sayin'
