Normster's 6V6 Overdrive Special Reverb

Post by adlibmusic »

I finally had some time to get some short clips recorded. These are only thru the clean channel; I'll get to the OD section another time. I used my '85 Esprit on the neck pup and 2X12 Celestion V30's in a closed-back cab I'm building. See what you think....

Nice clips and great page layout! I don't know what it sounds like in the room, but the recording sounds very good. Thanks for doing this!!!

It sounded good in the room. I used a different mike position and got more of what I was "hearing". Not loud either....

I like the whole setup very much. Thanks

I like it a lot. The tone is smooth and articulate.

I'd like to hear how the tone controls change the sound. Some of my Dumble's controls are very subtle and I'd like to see if that's me, or the tone stack.

I've added some OD clips to the linked page above. Used the same guitar, but played thru a Marshall 1960B 4X12 cab. (Sorry Scott) :D

Nice, very nice.
I'm going to have to build one. I think I'll go the 'Bob's Princeton Size' path as the 50watt fullsize version is a little heavy for me to lug around.
Out of interest which size/type PT and OT did you use?

This amp is just a bit different. It uses Trainwreck iron wound by Heyboer. (Toneslut trannys from Moose.) With the 6V6's it's probably closer to 22 watts than 40 watts. It has a 5AR4 tube rectifier rather than solid state so when it's cranked it gets just a little more sag. Also, because of the tube rectifier, the plate and screen voltage is lower and allows the power amp section to break up a little sooner. (Still has lots of headroom though.) I wouldn't exactly call it a Dumble clone but I do like the tone.

Those OD clips sound great:) Was curious.. did you use the FET input? Or just from jack to tube? I am considering building this, but am not sure on the FET thing....

No, I decided against the FET. I may add "hi/lo" input jacks or maybe just put a plug in the FET hole. I did build an FET input for my 70s/80s clone, but I don't use it so it hardly seems worth the effort.

Norm. The grid stopper and grid resistor affect the tone in cool ways (as you probably know). You might try, for example, a 68K resistor FOLLOWED by a 1M grid resistor to ground (a voltage divider). Gives a nice bluesy tone. Worth some experimentation for that second input.
