PI plates again..

Post by Tdale »

I'm going for a 10K trim between the PI plate resistors. Since some of you wrote that you sometimes use values as low as 90-something K for one of the plates I have a qustion.

Is the important thing that the two resistor values can be adjusted to be different?

Or are the actual values very important to? If so, using two 100K resistors and a pot, would give values that are over 100K for both plates, no matter how the pot is adjusted...

I've found that the best sound I've gotten from the PI is using 110k and 91k, no trimmer. I don't find much difference tweaking the trimmer so I've stuck with fixed values.

But that's me. Dogears suggested 100K and a 20K trimmer.

I have a 10K trimmer.. I think I'll try that...although I got Vishay/Dale 90.9K and 110K...

I got a precicion 10-turn pot, so I'll at least try it, to see how it works. It would be a shame not to use that beautiful pot :)

Also, I probably went a little crazy when I ordered the parts, but I got a 10-turn 100K pot for the OD entrance too... It's like some of the guys here said, it doesn' t really make sense to shop for certain resistors and cap, that are supposed to be the best, and then let the signal go through a tiny trim pot...

I use 10 K and see a great difference on the scope from end to end. RE: trimmers-

Keep in mind that Piher and CTS trimmers are carbon comp, and alot of 10 turns are wirewound or CER_MET and that wll DEFINITELY affect your tone.

What do you prefer....carbon or wire wound/cer_met?

I like good old carbon comp, and from the amps i've seen so did Howie.

Well, for the PI, the plate resistors are metal film, so the pot shouldn't wreck the sound that much I hope.

I doubt it will have much if any effect, you'd probably be OK with or without the trimmer there, I've done it both ways.
