Most useful switches?

Post by Tdale »

I'm planning to have 3 mini switches on the front of my hybrid-a type amp.

Bright, Deep, Rock/Jazz seems to be quite common..

But what 3 switches do you guys find to be the most useful?

I was thinking about mid boost, but I might put that on the back, and add a foot switch for it too, along with the clean/od switch... But if I don't have a foot switch for it, it would maybe be a good idea to put in on the front.

What are your top-3 switches?

Hi Tommy
I use OD and PreAmpBoost (EQ lift/defeat) on foot switch of course (you didn't mention this)
I have Jazz/Rock, never use it in jazz mode.
never use the Deep sw so will be converting to Mid boost (might get a little use)
never use the bright but seems like a common sw that is nice to include.
just my $ .02,

I'll start by saying everyone is different so YMMV. I currently have Rock/Jazz, Bright, PAB and Mid boost. I always leave the bright on and the Rock/Jazz in the Rock position.

I am thinking about changing this confuration to eliminate the R/J and make it a selectable mid cap for sort of a Single Coil/Humbucker voicing. I believe Scott has done this on one of his as well.

So to answer your question the most useful switches are the PAB, Mid boost and soon to be Mid Cap switch.

Tommy,
I don't know so I put them all in. OD and PAB on rear panel. I figure what I don't use won't hurt me. I've got all that stuff mounted now; pots, switches, jacks etc. All the holes are dug. I'll stick the trannys on and the boards in there this coming week. Wiring to follow soon there after. I'm retired you know. Retired people don't have any time to do this stuff. If I had a yard I'd have go back to work.

I like the OD and PAB most, mid boost next. Bright is important so you can make adjustments for different guitars. Deep is not as useful as I expected, and Rock/Jazz not useful to me at all.

I have OD and PAB on the footswitch, bright and mid boost on the front panel.

Only ones i use are the eq bypass and od/clean... but if i build again i will also eliminate some pots... like od drive.. on my amp it doesn't do much.. i find i use the presence as a drive.. first amp i have had that i actually use presence on:)

Really? That's odd. I find the OD drive VERY effective and presence to be very subtle, only adding a little brightness, no additional drive at all.

Yeah, im using norms layout from way back... but i find i keep the od drive on 100%, so its not that its useless.. its that i don't use it:) But the presence is just nuts.. i keep it on like 3.. if i crank it up the amp gets way way over the top. On like my marshall and other amps the presence is subtle on this thing its way out there..

Pre amp boost is the one that completely bypasses the EQ, right? While Mid boost adds an extra cap to the treble pot?

I might go for OD/Clean and PAB on the back for foot switch use, and use bright, mid boost on the front. The third one on the front will probably be rock/jazz....

I'm not too god at reading the EQ schematics, so if someone would explain what the "deep" and "rock/jazz" switches actually does, I'd appreciate it.
