Jelle's visit and HRM stuff

Post by dogears »

So Jelle Welagen came over to my house yesterday with his suede HRM in tow. Same amp that he brought to the NJ Amp Show a couple months ago.

Jelle and I have been buds for many years, from even before his move to America. I always told him that if he came to the US, he should come by. He finally did. He has been making amps now for several years. They look great and are well built. Tone and feel are happening too. Maybe he can chime in with some additional particulars.

First we tested his stash of 12AX7 tubes with my Maxi Matcher. About 50 nice tubes. Then we moved on to playing some amps. I am pretty sure Jelle REALLY loved my Ojai. It is just crazy good.

Next we plugged into his HRM. It really has a singing tone. It is quite different from the Ojai, it being an EL34 HRM amp and all..... I quickly set up the mics and did three takes. Two with midboost on (Jelle likes this) and one with the midboost off. All had PAB on. We had to hurry since with had 6pm reservations at Chifa in Philly. Nothing like tubes, amps, and Jose Garces gourmet cuisine. Mmmmmm

Anyway, here are the clips. No effects in the built in Welagen loop. Multimiced , about 1 inch from grill, with SM57 and GT Hardtop condenser. Glaswerks 4 ohm 2X12 w/ Celestion G1265. Very minor effects added in mix.

Clips in order of recording them

Clip 1, midboost on, clean master off (rolls highs a bit due to bright cap...oops) http://scottlernermusic.com/jelle/WelagenHRM.mp3

Clip 2, midboost off, clean master not off http://scottlernermusic.com/jelle/WelagenHRMnoMB.mp3

Clip 3, midboost back on, clean master not off, internal gain up a smidge, recorded after we got back from dinner with only minutes to spare before Jelle had to go to catch the bus http://scottlernermusic.com/jelle/WelagenHRM1.mp3

I wish I had more time with the amp to make some subtle tweaks to the stack and/or record more clips with different mic positions. We really had no time left.

Hope you dig!

Scott,

Real nice, as always.

But I'd bet you that you couldn't make my amp sound as good as your Ojai. ('')

Is there any special formula to eliminate pick attack, like you do so well?

Not that you're asking for a comparo/selecto, but I prefer the 2nd clip over the other two.

Great amp, Jelle! Responsive and singing!
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

Scott, I really loved your Ojai. Sounded great! Thanks for having me over, I had a blast.

Thanks for the nice comments! When Scott was playing that first take, I wondered why the top end was not there... we forgot the clean MV. It actually sounds nice and santana-esque in the clip. The other two sound more crisp. I hope you guys like them. Actually, this is my darkest sounding amp. And the cleans are nice too.

I'll get some pics of that amp and post them. I should have one when we compared it to the Ultrasound tan Dumble at the NY Ampshow.

Awesome work guys, thanks for posting the clips. Scott, these tone comparisons are very useful. I really think the first clip (with Mid Boost on) sounds great. Darker yes, but more full, thick, and fatter sounding. Just my opinion and of no particular value.

Jelle your builds are great.

Jelle doesn't suprise me,i know you build great sounding amps. That amp you can hear the bloom,it wants to break loose. I'm sure Scott had a smile on his face the whole time he was playing the amp.
Would really like to hear it with the fanes. I know these are clips, and can only imagine what it sounds like live in the room. :D

Richie! What's happening? :D The Fanes sound great with this amp. Medusa 100 and the Studio 12L both sound really good with it. I get mine from Tonic amps:

I tried to get a really big and fluid sound from the HRM circuit with tight bass. It's great to hear that the harmonics are there too. Thanks Scott!

Yes, the Fanes eat those EVs. I tried one against an EV in same type cabs. Night and day diference. Don't know why more people don't try them.

I Agree!! I tried a WEM Starfinder cab w/ 4x12 of original Fane Crescendos and it sounded steller w/ my d-clone...... Massive headroom!! Too bad the old ones cost a fortune..........
