Which hole?

Post by skyboltone »

Well, I finally dug my tube caddy out from behind all that junque in the storage unit and found I have 7 nos 12ax7. One RCA black plate, 3 GE, 2 Sylvania, and a Japanese tube labeled Curtis Mathis.

Which hole should I stick the RCA black plate in? I assume V1 but I could stick a pair of Sylvanias in V1 and V2 and one of the others or a Sovtek in the PI. How does the PI impact tone? Anybody experimented with all that? So far for me it's all heresay but the tabloids call that RCA black plate the holy grail itself.

I thought I had remembered a bunch of 6BQ5 (EL-84) but alas not a one. Lot's of 6146A though. 811As, 807, 5U4, 5Z4. A quartet of RCA 6AQ5, I wonder why I have those. Probably an output for '50s '60s radios.

Thanks
Dan

Of course you are right. I think I was crowing a bit more than anything else. At the time I was acquiring tubes I was much more interested in transmitting output tubes and various Collins receiver tubes. It was a very pleasant surprise.

The 6AQ5s are 7 pin 6V6s. I will be playing with those babies down the road.

Thanks for the tip
