V1 tube - your favorites?

Post by Darkbluemurder »

What are your favorite tubes for this position and why?

So far I've had good luck with JJ, Tesla and even Fender factory labelled stuff. I also liked the TT (labelled by the German distributor Tube Town) which are Chinese made.

I didn't vote, but thought you might like to hear these clips from Glasman...

Gary posted these clips a few months ago and hopefully will drop into this thread and provide some details. The real surprise for me was the JJ EC803. Very sweet sounding tube.

I've been using EH 12AX7 for all preamp tubes and TAD 6L6 for power tubes, but lately EH's quality has taken a turn for the worse. I just ordered a batch of JJ's from Eurotubes but haven't tried them in the amp yet.

I use a flat plate telefunken in V1 and a Mullard in V2. V3 is just a JJ.
In an HRM this combo sounds great.

My favorite current generation tubes is the JJ803S. Downside is that they are long plate design and are a little microphonic (not overly so).

But they make up for that with nice warm, rich tone.

My stash of NOS is limited, BUT I have 4 diamond bottom Telefunkens that are my reference tubes by which all others are judged.

I also have a Super Reverb that is fully loaded with "real" Mullards and I have been thinking that I should pull one from the normal channel and keep it as a reference as well.

I, too, love the Telefunkens, especially in the OD channel.

Am also using the JJ803S with RCA 6l6GCs in my Bassman OD. I love the tone, and have also used the JJ6L6s. So far, the JJs are the closest to matching the RCAs tone and dynamics. IMO BobW
