Rawcab from ebay

Post by Milkmansound »

I just received one of these - I am going to cover it and re-house one of my personal amps. I have to say, the quality is pretty damn good for the money.

Has anyone else tried one? The ebay user is sorrycharly. I was originally nervous about the typos in his listings and correspondence however the cab is pretty great.

Next step - tolex learning curve. I will try and post some pics when its done

I've got a 5E3 cab from him that I'm just going to stain/lacquer. It is great quality for the price.

Sweet!
Check out Taylor's tolex tutorial here (sticky in the Speaker/Cab section) for some excellent hints if you need them.

Looks like the corners are done with a half-blind dovetail and a roundover bit. Is that right? Looks like a really nice cab.

Tolex isn't that hard. Taylor's video is "required" reading. Like anything, it's 80% planning and 20% doing.

For a 1st attempt, be sure to get the right kind of covering. Not all vinyl is the same. The stuff with the heavy cottony lining is all wrong (don't ask me how I know.)

The other thing is the adhesive. The best stuff isn't available or hard to find in small, affordable quantities. The last one I tried, I used the 3M Super 77 spray on adhesive. It was way better than ordinary contact cement and it worked out very well.

Because it is pine and fairly porous, you may want to prime it with a light coat of polyurthane. This will fill the pores some and keep the adhesive on the surface where you want it. Of course, it may raise the grain, but a light sanding after priming is in order anyway.

Enjoy the project!

That came out great. Speaker grill is perfectly straight. Sure you haven't done this before :?

installed the hardware this morning - and she's just about done!

Definitely give this raw cabs guy a shot. This was a very cool thing to learn, and is just as essential to the history of amplifiers as the circuits themselves. I am not going to cover every cab, but its nice to know that I can knock out a Fender tolex job when I need to. The whole thing, from ebay purchase to today was about a week and a half. No one else can get you a cabinet that fast - Mojotone takes like 90 days! (and honestly the woodwork on this is higher quality)

I will post pics in a few weeks when I get a chance to build up my chassis (weird that I have the cab first, and no amp to install into it!)

Hey, that looks great, especially for a 1st time. No will be looking at it any closer than we see it in the pics. Don't go pointing out where you "messed up" and folks won't know. Congratulations on a job well done!
