If you were going to build a vocals monitor, what driver or drivers would you put in it?

Buy the Fender 1270P powered monitor instead. You can find them used these days. They are killer and very small. Well, my opinion.

This is going to run off an EL84 push/pull amp and have input from a U-47

Not sure about which HF horn, and driver, but I have a couple of EV monitors from the 80's with the EVM12S woofer that are the best I've had. I had a set of JBL's with 12's, and one fellow that worked with us had a Yamaha 12, none sounded as good, (or as loud).
Maybe the Emminence EV clone would work well?

I recently rebuilt a floor wedge, using following components:

Replaced the original 15" driver with a JBL E140-8.

Crossover is a PRV Audio 2DF2k 2-Way Passive Crossover @ 2 kHz

Monitor rig is powered by Crown power amps, with Rane 31 band graphic EQs to ring out the system. Performance is far better than the original Fender parts.


My other wedges have similar horns/compression drivers, but the cabs are smaller and use EVM12L drivers @ 8 ohms.

My monitors are not horns, as i don't need a long throw device for monitors. I like tweeters with crossovers and 8" speakers. Last one's i built i made 5 different crossovers until i found the one i liked best. Work really nice and warm. If you can i like a soft dome tweeter. You will need power handling of at least 60 watts. I like 100-150 watts capacity for each of the 8" speakers.

There are a few coaxial speakers made by emminence and radial that would be excellent for monitoring and come in 8" and up. With the coax units you can save space and get all the advantages of a point source system. Most are available with passive networks, but can also be bi-amped for best performance.

We used to run EV wedges with 12" driver and horn.

As I recall they sounded pretty good.
