Cherry & Walnut Mini Cab

Post by Geeze »

After long deliberation I have finally manned up and cut the cherry & walnut I bought last June. Here it is with 23 coats of linseed and mineral spirits. I wish I had bought all four of the cherry planks as they were all spectacular. The walnut is Peruvian with lots of figure hidden in the darkness.

I am working on a design for the speakers to put a gold 10" and a pair of 8" wired separately. More to follow. Will use the same salt and pepper grill cloth as the cab below. Overall dimensions 20.25"x 20.25" x 12". I plan to build a matching head cover with the left over wood.

Wow! Beauty. The black bits on the front and back are the walnut? Is it painted black?

Mannnnnnn....the inside is too nice to hide from view. How about a plexi baffle? Will that work?

Hi John - my love for walnut is only exceeded by my lust for true quilted maple.

Hi Phil,

Hmmm, plexi baffles. Has this been done?

As usual, I am making it up as I go. The case is sized for 4 - 8" but I got a wild hair and want to cram a 10" with 2 - 8". The current design has two baffles the front / slant for the grill and a vertical about 1.25" behind the grill baffle. To limit odd echoes I am looking at PVC or similar tubes to channel the 8s forward.

The other option is to have the 10" on the slant and have it overhang the lower vertical baffle. I don't think it will work but I can draw it in cad to see if it will put a bulge in the grill cloth. Also how much of the basket will be unsupported.

Quilted walnut John!?! Slobber, slobber. Do you have a picture - probably bad for my health to see it.

If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.

I'm asking, too! IMO, you'll need it fairly thick or it will flex. Otherwise, what could be the problem with it?

Did you realize, total surface area of 4x8 will be only be 28% more than 2x10? You can probably fit 2x12 in there without a problem and that is more surface area then either. I don't know about oddball configurations...

The inside dimensions are 18.75" square. Only one 12 would fit - thought about that too. The sweetest speaker I have is a 10 Gold - absolutely love that sound with the Mini. I wanted to see what the 8's would sound like with it.

I modeled up the 10" on the slant portion of the baffle and it won't protrude into the grill - I would have to build a ring to support the speaker fully as 20% of it would be unsupported. This is an experiment from the get go and it amuses me to push my abilities to problem solve. If it doesn't work I can always do what my wood working buddy says - 'Burn it and deny it ever existed'.

I know you're kidding. That thing could easily bring $1200 at one of the major craft fairs, as is. "Events" like this http://www.sugarloafcrafts.com/
