I have two old Pyle 12" guitar speakers I wouldn't part with for anything. I don't know if they're bargain, but they get a bad rep online from cork sniffers. I have them in an old Silvertone Twin Twelve cabinet and they sound great.

I'm a hillbilly from Northern California!

I found there are two types of heppner speakers (not talking smooth and ribbed) some have a smaller magnet, some have a larger magnet with a bolt on the back of one of them. The smaller magnets sound really nice, tonally I liked them as well as my EV's in an oval back pine 2x12 (efficiency is another story). They came out of an early 60's L-100 spinet.

I ordered 4 more off e-bay to make more cabinets and they had bigger magnets and the bolt on the back and they sounded muddy and lifeless in comparison. A friend of mine has a pair, I'm hoping they're the good sounding variety so I can build a second cabinet to use as stereo wet cabinets in a wet dry wet set up.

The best sounding speakers I have are some no name thrift store 8" rola like speakers that I paired with a single ended dearmond style amp I built, that thing was loud and sounded like the best cranked plexi you've ever heard! Would make a great champ style recording rig. Super fragile. I've repaired them a bunch of times with TP and tacky glue but they sound so good!

Here's a pair on ebay with the smaller magnets and no bolts;

and here's a pair with the bigger magnets and bolt;

Has anyone else found the difference in sound between the two different types? Would be curious if that's really the difference between good ones and bad...

For completeness here's the two cone types (smooth and ribbed) apparently one is a bass cone (I'm guessing the ribbed one with the vented cap) and the other for highs the two together sound good, haven't tried two smooths or two ribbed together;

ER,
Interesting about the Heppners. I'll have to look and see what I have, someday. Pretty certain they are both ribbed though. I think I have read elsewhere the ribbed were the higher frequency drivers and the smooth was for the bass. Though I would have thought the opposite.

I have a pair of University alnico 12's that have been rebuilt with heavier voice coil.

Some wonderful distortion happens when the coil can overcome the grip of the magnet. Unfortunatly on some of the bigger magnet alnicos that where they catch fire.

If you like the swirly thing that alnico can do, look for small magnets on the vintage drivers.

There's a deal on some Peavey scorpion Replacement baskets on Ebay.

I just bought an 8 ohm one for less than 50 bucks shipped.The 4 ohms are even cheaper

I guess its only a deal if you have a blown scorp and actually care to replace it.I think they are good speakers
