My fav duo so far is Eminence Red Fang & Private Jack, placed diagonally in an oversized 25% open back 212 cab.

Eminence Texas Heat and Eminence Swamp Thang speakers are my favorite combo, in an "X" pattern in a 4x12.

A Vintage 30 and a Classic Lead 80 sound pretty great together as well.

I only tried it in an open back 2 x 12 but it was great with an 18 watter.

I blew one of the speakers in an Ampeg VT-22. I think those were Eminence with a square magnet.

Someone sold me a used EVM-12L cheap to replace it (This was the seventies).

The combo of one speaker that compresses with one that is more hifi was pretty magical. But at the time, I thought the magic was the new speaker. A few years later I replaced the other Eminence with another EVM, but it wasn't the same, and I went back to two different speakers.

Something about two different voices separated in space just makes an amp sound more 3D.
So what would be a current equivilant of a combination of compression and hi-fi?

And what would you use for a 4x12?

Would you ever use more than 2 different speakers in a 4x12 or is that just overkill?

Hmm. I guess maybe a Celestion v30 for the compressive side. The EVM-12L's have been reissued, but you can occasionally find originals on eBay for cheaper. The originals were rated to 300 watts.

I've never tried it, but some like the Kevin O'Connor 'detuned' cabinet technique. Just use two speakers in a 4x12.

I had heard someplace that Eddie Van Halen in the Vh-1 early 70's days loved to mix the Altec ( or was it jbl? ) for the clean, with a G12m greenback for a mix of clean and dirt, and that the Celestion g12-65 of the early 80's was spawned from that concept.

I don't really like mixing Celestions and Jensens, but an Alnico and a ceramic is fair game. One of my cabinets has a mix of Celstion G12H30/ Vintage 30 speakers, and thats a tried and true combination..sounds very good.

In general I like to keep one certain speaker in the cabinet though, I believe less is usually more.

I seem to recall mixing a Celestion Blue with a Celestion G12H30 was the combination of choice at 18 watt.com.

I have this combination in my 18 watter, it sounds pretty good.

Would that be the stamped or cast frame 150? I'm sure it's a great combo regardless.

Actually one stamped and one cast is pretty sweet too, where you get the presence of the cast and the body of the stamped.

Elsewhere I read about some fellow who ran... was it the Axa 12 w. a G12H100. Tried a G12-80 with both 150 models but the G12-80 was left in the dust. It did however provide some fluffy eges to the Fanes, which may be an interesting tone for some.

Hi everybody, noob here, first post! I like this topic so I'll just dive in.

Where I've mixed speakers, I've tried to put some thought into it and do stuff that is complimentary. Mixing way disparate speakers like Jensens and Celestions, alnicos and ceramics, JBLs and non-JBLs, 10s and 12s, 1.5" VCs and 4" VCs, spl 96 and spl 103 etc. just doesn't make sense to me. I guess I like to play it pretty safe. Still, I continue to read "mix" threads on the off chance that one day somebody will stumble onto a real revelation.

I'm a big fan of the tried and true G12M and G12H mix. I mostly use Weber's versions. Because the Hs are a bit louder, and I like hearing more of the Ms, I put the Hs on bottom (no X pattern for 4x12.) From the DC30 to the ever popular Blue Dog and Silver Bell etc, this mix really is tried and true.

Thanks Tom. And yeah, I'm in awe of the TAG brain trust.

==================================

This came up on another forum. Anybody ever do a V30/G12-65 mix? How'd it sound?

Welcome to Ampage.

I have combined Alnico and Ceramic versions of essentially the same speaker, to different brands, and different sizes (8 & 10 or 10 and 12) with good results. I've mixed 55Hz and 75Hz speakers, likewise. A weber 10inch Blue Dog Alnico and a Tone Tubby Ceramic Hemp Cone. Most of these in Combo Amps.

I guess it depends on the amp circuit, the cabinet.

Lefty mentioned KOC's Detuned Cabinet, ("Sealed Cab, No interior sound absorbing material, and in a 2X12 only one speaker or in a 4X12 just 2X12 mounted). I've yet to try this but look forward to the day.

Mixing speaker sizes in Combo amps have a vintage precedent. I guess one's actual mileage will vary.
