Evm12l recone kit?

Post by dragonbat13 »

Who makes a decent recone kit for an EV 12l?

I have one with a busted up cone I got for free. I believe it came out of a Klipsch Heresy from the 70's.

I want to put it in a 50 watt D'lite combo.

I don't want to send it out. I want to try and do it myself. If I fail I'll send it out. Only the strong survive!

Any recommendations?

Excuse the mess. Cleanup day in the morning.

It looks like the cone is still good and it's just the dust cap missing. If the cone is not damaged, I would seriously leave as is. Replace the dust cap and you'll have a great speaker. I have never heard one with a re-cone that I liked over an original.

Agree with Ian all around. You can clean it up and cap it for the win.

Lol.

Okay here's the truth on this post. I posted it thinking, for who knows what reason, the voice coil was damaged.

Upon further inspection I believe I'm going the suggested route.
Would this speaker have a white EV dust cap or just a blank black one? I know it's not a gold letter era speaker.

I hate to say this as a DIY person but if you have a local recone shop that can do it, you might consider sending it to them.

I say this because they are a dying business. I work for JBL and talk with many of the Authorized Service Centers and there is a common refrain: "My kids have no interest in this and once I retire, its going away."

Reconing is a little bit of an art and skill. If you have a local shop maybe befriend them and let them know you dabble in amps. Our local one here in Dallas is Freeman-Tuell, and they have been an institution for decades. It's literally the old man and his son in law. Once I got to know them they were willing to do all kinds of "off menu" speaker things (Putting in different impedance voice coil, smooth cone vs ribbed cone, light doping vs heavy doping) and learned a lot about speakers before I even went to JBL.

The added benefit is, you don't have to go through a few recone kits before you get the gap shimmed right :D

I have a bunch of naked EV baskets that I'd like to recone. 15" mostly. The problem is that it's impossible to find OEM EV cones.

anyone got a supplier for a *REAL* 12L, 15L or 15B Series II cone kit?

I agree that nothing beats an original driver, but I'd like to recone these empty baskets that aren't doing me any good otherwise.

Does anybody know if my speaker in the pics above would have a white EV label or just a black without label dust cap?

In my mind I am thinking it is a logo speaker because it is more likely than not. It's the reason you buy the cabinet. 🙂

But in images, Klipsch never used branded speakers.

But you can use anything light that fits. Anything.

Miles again on the mark. You could take a plain black and with a silver pen scribble "what, me worry?" on it.

Weber Speakers have a whole range of paper caps available in their parts catalog priced for less than the cost of shipping.

I'm going to use the blank one. A d'lite with a Klipsch labeled speaker should throw em for a loop.
