Back for a visit to this post.....

It turns out the recone from ASW was flawed. The cone surround was not glued down properly. Which means I wasn't really hearing the speaker as it might sound in perfect working order. I called ASW and they are anxious to recone the speaker which makes me feel OK in a way. I'll return with some different clips.

Also, on a different note, I have also reconsidered the cabinet itself. After reading a passage from the Ken notes, it seems the back of the cab is very important - more so than I thought. More on this later, too.

Alright, speaker on the way to ASW. This recone has cost me a bundle all said and done. Shtzbah.

But let's talk about the cabinet back. I have a Chinese built plywood AC30 clone 2/12 speaker box. It. Originally came with two pieces of wood for the back, one for the top half and one for the bottom, leaving a good sized whole in the middle area. And remember that the speakers are dropped to the bottom area of the cab, not centered, because it was basically an AC30 cab that was intended for the combo amp - not a speaker box.

Alright, that sorted, I read that post about the 'Ken Pages' article in The Gerald Weber book. This was the one about using a half back instead of a split back or something else. So I tried it. The back area on the Vox cab is 19" tall, and the recommendation was for a back a little less than 1/2 the height. Hm.... So being me, I looked at things and decided on a 13" back. Sorry Ken, I couldn't do it!! But no matter, the cab was transformed. It's amazing how different the speakers sound - much better - whether bass, mids, or highs. I have no extra bracing, BTW, just a 1/2" thick piece of Baltic birch 13" high and spanning the back

If you have a cab like mine or something similar I would urge you to consider Ken's advice.

The recone is back from ASW and it a much better speaker. Weird, eh? The dust cap is very different, very open mesh that easily shows the slug in the basket. Not seen anything like it before.

And it sounds bright like the first recone did, but in a different way, a better sounding speaker, IMO. I have it paired with a Scumnico 65 watter in an open back 2/12 and will do some recording in the days ahead, comparing it to my Weber Blue and Silver loaded 2/12.
