Powered by a Mesa Mini with a Celestion Gold the cab sounded very clean, sparkling even - the bass was not oppressive until I cranked it on full. I didn't put insulation in with the Gold - it didn't need it. Jazz to Foo Fighters all sounded warm. Got me contemplating putting the gold in the cherry cab with a port or two ala Billyz's secret sauce.

It will be a couple of weeks before the EV gets put in. It will be interesting to see how it sounds with a big bottle amp.

Currently building an African mahogany / [insert contrasting wood here] 4x10. My house is filling up with cabs. :)

the Gold sounds good in any cabinet. Build the Du***e 1 x12" cabinet shown in the files section.

I'm just finishing up my first 806 today. I had some 15mm BB floating around so figured why not?
I stuck closely to the EV plans, I used 18mm MDF for the inner cleats.
Covered in some spare blonde tolex.
I've got a Swamp Thang to go in - looking forward to giving it a try.
I might use it on its own or with my G12-65 1x12 sat on top and the head on top of that (100w 2nd generation hybrid D style)

Cool sounds, Billy. There was a cat here who had a Rocket clone (I think), maybe an Express, for sale, plugged into a 2/12 ASW cab with Elegants, it was linked here but was on YouTube, and it sounded like ass. Haha. Totally convinced me to avoid the Elegants. I have since sent a '74 cream back off to Ron for a KTS-70 recone so I am hopeful it will be worth the effort. I know you're a dealer for them, so you must've tried the KTS-70. Of all the speakers that ASW sells, it has the most reviews by a landslide, hence my interest. What's your take on it?

As to cabs, did you ever try the Pure 64 cabs, and, if you did, what was your take away?

Getting back to your cab, what's the weight?

Rooster,
The KTS70 is a great speaker, probably the finest Celestion clone ever. The Elegante 's are the best Alnico mag speaker made today. The only reason they are not used as often as others is because they are also the most expensive , ha ha. I have watched Ron build them and know just how detailed he is with everyone.
Never heard the pure64, there are just just too many boutique makers. Out there today to even begin to keep up with all of them.
I am not as sold on the ASW cabs though, they are good but I have heard much better, like Port City. The ASW cabs do not sound like ass though .
Celestions have a bigger gap than ASW , so don't expect it to compare . But I have recone more than a few old celestions with ron''s cones and they have turned out well. Better than a current Celestion kit.

Woah, thanks for all the info, Billy. A tighter gap you say? Hm, that's something I respect in the world of speakers. That said, I also see David Grissom signing off on his Celestion recone - which makes me feel pretty good about the recone. Also i will say that Ron does seem like a good guy from our conversation and email at this point, glad to hear he is thoughtful about his product.

Sounds like I may have to buy a stock KTS-70 to do a comparison. Hm, I'll think about that. And you're right, the Elegante is way expensive in my world. I mean, if something works that well it's not expensive, but I haven't heard one in person.

As to the Pure64 cab, a friend in town has one he is going to let me check out for a bit. He even said I could load my reconed speaker in it if I wanted. Which is really cool. Thanks, Steve!

Anyway, your cab sounded great, Billy. I'll post a video of the Pure64 and the reconed Celestion, too.
