A thiele cab with a Peavey scorpion.

How stupid would that be?

There's a deal on some Peavey scorpion Replacement baskets on Ebay.

I just bought an 8 ohm one for less than 50 bucks shipped.The 4 ohms are even cheaper

I guess its only a deal if you have a blown scorp and actually care to replace it.I think they are good speakers

If I'm not mistaken, those sport the "field replaceable" baskets ...... a fancy way of saying they can be repaired at the gig. The replacement basket assembly is fairly light and portable, easily packed away, ideal for touring musicians on a budget. What's not to like about that?

I have a pair of 90's era Scorpions that still sound good ..... like Cassius Clay said ..... they float like a butterfly ...... sting like a .......... scorpion.

One time I had a real scorpion living inside a cab with a scorpion .He came crawling out one day while I was playing I nearly shit myself.Then smashed him about 12 times with a book.

Thats only one of several scorpion encounters I think they have it out for me.

Well after some research.I found at least one person that likes his scorpion in a thiele cab.

However the speaker parameters suggest a different story.The high QTS of the scorpion lends itself to open back design.A properly designed ported cab would need to be 8 or 9 cubic feet.

Have any of you tried a Heppner Alnico 15" speaker?
I've got three of these and haven't had a chance to hook 'em up to an amp yet. The other problem is I don't have a cabinet that takes a 15" speaker.

I have an old Black Widow 15" that I really like. I never had an actual black widow spider come out of it though.....

The Black widows Parameters are extremely similar to the EV12L.I bet one would sound good in thiele cab.

I've had some encounters with wider's.My brother is missing part of a butt cheek from one.

Nice thread, Here's new meat...

Pioneer PW-302A. Rated 16 ohms 25 watts. Very efficient for their time, tone is articulate, big bottom and lower mids, crispy top, nice singing vowels and detail in breakup/distorted tones, gorgeous cleans. Old hifi big plug big iron big magnet big 2"-ish VC alnico woofers made in the golden hifi years by or for Coral, super top end Japanese maker, these are very high quality construction parts, especially the cone, and usually had for around 30-50 bucks each on eBay. These can be driven to glory with a single ended amp or can handle a pair of 6l6gc''s if not dimed out, pretty consistent in basic tone settings going from lower to higher volumes. Some have a bit of cracking at the edge of the surround, if so rub do a thin, narrow line of black Liquid Electrical Tape (rubber cement) on the crack at the back of the cone, if not overdone will be stronger than new and no significant treble degradation. These make joyful noises driven with a pair-o-6v's or '84's. Makes a small amp sound like a bigger one.

I think the alnico pioneer is what was in the Teisco checkmate 25. A great sounding guitar speaker, cast frame , heavy alnico.

Search "Vintage Pioneer Woofer 12" on ebay, at this post time a nice pair is going for 65 bucks BIN plus 2 year square trade warranty for around 15 bucks more, plus shipping. That's a moderate price for a single new production speaker, let alone two of these. Take a look and zoom in on the backsides of the cones, you will see some big, long fibers rarely seen in today's cones, these are parabolic with a doped surround.
