Ceriatone DC30 Standby Switch Layout

Post by madmac »

Hi Guys. Im building a Dizzy30 and noticed that the standby switch wiring is different on the latest layout compared to photos of some of your builds and the photos on the ceriatone website.

The original method seems to be just breaking the ground connection with standby switch from the CT of the 285V tap on the PT where as the latest layout shows the wiring completely different.

Has anyone used the wiring as per the August 2012 layout?
Are there any advantages or disadvantages to using either method?

Thanks

Lifting the PT CT for standby is not a good idea when vacuum rectifiers are involved. A very large current will flow through the rectifier on start-up if the power switch is turned on before the standby, and on each standby off-on cycle since the filters will bleed down and the rectifier filament will remain hot. Putting the standby between the reservoir capacitor and the rectifier as shown on the layout has the same issue. Better to add an eyelet and put the standby between the reservoir and the OT CT node since the reservoir can charge slowly as the rectifier filament warms up, and switching to standby lets the reservoir stay charged. Some people will complain about the switch being next to the choke, but many Fender amps were wired this way.

These might give you some insight: http://www.londonpower.com/standby-switch

Simply use the panel hole for something else, IMO.

Damn... thanks for this link. Is this a part of Merlin's PS book?
