vox ac4 filter caps

Post by mark enger »

vox schematic shows 32-32 filter caps, most other info call for 20-20, 16-16
not sure which to use, though i do have a 32-16 capcan that would be easiest
I wont be using tube recto, will use SS, help me decide please, i have parts on hand

Just finished an AC4 build. I used an EZ81 tube rectifier with 32uF x 32uF filtering, produced a very lively amp with minimal mains hum. Pretty decent low end considering the 8 inch speaker.

I was using the iron from a 1964 Phillips reel to reel tape recorder, plus mustards recovered from it and some nice solid core wire. I did it P to P in a chassis and cab from a modern Vox 15R solid state combo (looks the part). Finished it with an 8" Weber blue Pup alnico.

Is my first full build and once I'd worked out the transformer wiring, it was pretty straight forward. I added a depth control for the tremolo and I'd say that was a good move as the stock circuit gives pretty "shallow" trem. It's a dark amp so I made some minor mods to the tone control to brighten it, will detail and post up some photos Saturday.
