New express build works, but volume pot doesnt

Post by guilds100 »

I just finished my express build per schematic found here. Biased it to 34ma. Pluged in my guitar and immediately heard output with the volume all the way down. Turning the volume and the tone stack knobs all the way up have no effect on the sound. It stays at the same volume. The presense pot works, whoopie. The only thing on the layout that has me slightly confused is the input jack wiring. Im using a shorting jack in that position. Should it be a non shorting jack there?

It uses a shorting jack at the input so when you unplug the guitar cable there will be no incoming noise.

Better recheck your wiring and did you solder directly to the pots (the bus bar) across the back of each pot? May have ruined the Volume pot or wiring error.

A sanity check against the layout / schematic seems like a good place to start. Sounds like you might have two issues.
Pics might flag something to the more experienced folks if you have any along with a voltage chart.

Is the circuit ground connected to the volume/tone pots?

I can't find the wire from the volume pot wiper to the next gain stage. Hard to see...

EDIT: I see it now...

Check your tone stack wiring thoroughly.
No offense but you could stand to neaten up things there as far as lead dress.
You may have a stray strand of wire shorting out something.

1+ on cleaning up the buss and following a known good layout.
The shielding on the cable also needs to be dressed.

Looks as though the shielded cable from the vol pot has the screen tied to the bottom of R7? The vol pot seems a more logical place. This will also allow you to tidy up the screen on the cable.

The vol pot looks to be grounded over on the cathode for the 3rd stage instead of the end of the buss?

I thought I had a bad volume pot as it measured out of range while in the circuit. I removed it to measure and re-ran the connections to where they are in the photo. I found a bad ground connection on the resistor from tube 2 to ground. Everything is working now. :D

Check your wire going to your plate load resistors for first & second stage. I had mine crossed & got the same problem
