Trainwreck Head Cabs

Post by gearhead »

Who is/would make a TW sized head box from hardwood?. I know that Bob Burt does great stuff (bought from him before), but he has a greater lead time now that he's more known and in demand (alright, I'm kinda antsy right now;).

In doing a search, came across Sultone.com. Have emailed them but not received a reply yet. Anybody worked with them before?

Any others?

Thanks,

Dave

If your antsy you might wanna pass on Sultone..i have no 1st hand experience but i recall reading on the gearpage of a guy who was considering legal action against Sultone because his cab was not being delivered and his emails not replied . There is a guy on the gearpage..name is Distortion I believe does some real nice work and its a hobby type thing so wait might not be as long as Bob Burt type thing.

There's a nice wood worker named Mike Gaines that has occasionally posted here - gaines@megapipe.net . Mike has done several Trainwreck cabs for people here, including myself.

Do a search, some pictures should turn up. Nice Cherry cabs with tight dovetails...

Thanks for the tips and info. Sultone is definitely not for the impatient.

Sent off an email to distortion; he's the one that did the Komet 60 V cab with flame maple. Gaga beautiful. Komet 60. His lead time is a number of weeks. Cool thing in his reply, said he is doing a replacement cab for the first ever built of our favorite amp!

Have sent off an email to Mike Gaines. Have done numerous searches, but can't sem to find any other references, or especially pictures.

Thanks for the heads up!

Wow, the Komet 60 cab is a real piece of work!

The Gaines cab looked cool too, though I'm a sucker for the flamed maple.

Yeah, Distortion's flame maple and bubinga cab is the shiznits for sure. I think it looks as good or better than the actual KF50 cabs...

I haven't seen the KF-50 cabs, but your probably right. A very impressive cab!

Does anyone have this guys email address?

You'd be mad not to consider him for a cab for your build.

Hi all since my cab builder came back with a high price and the weather is warm enough to open the wood shop for the year, I just had to get a new Radial arm saw. I will make some in the near future. Here's a pic of some recent cabs.

Yeah the KF50 is a nice cab.. I had #2 which had probably the nicest wood of the 1st 10 made --they came in batches of 10--. I sold it though..even though it was a really really nice amp. Thats another story though..lol. Though it was really nice wood..i wasnt BLOWN away by the wood..but ive been dealing with 5A type guitar woods for years and years so im a bit jaded by "nice" figure, as opposed to Insane figuring. The big difference I think in Distortions cab and the KF50 is he lacquered it, the KF50 was oil finish..lacquer definitely enhances the figure in the wood though. I too really like his K60 cab..though Im not crazy about the maple top..thats just a person preference though..i like just the V in maple. But I really dig the way he outlined the V in a different wood. Also he made side cut-outs in the headbox which is a good idea cuz the KF50 had no handle at all and no side cut-outs...kinda hard to carry. He seems like a straight up guy..we had a deal go awry but he kept his word and thats the big thing in my book. I would buy one from him if thats what I was lookin for.
