The EHX EL34 is a 1:1 copy of the RFT EL34 [Siemens]

Post by rp »

That attention getting headling is a quote from here, #7:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubes-va ... ost4443642

thought I'd cross post it knowing how Siemens EL34s are considered a component to the Express sound.

Whether the statement in the DIYA post is true, and if the EHX tubes sound anything like Siemens I can't say. Maybe others here can relate their experiences.

Ok, I google imaged it and got this from 2007. So they are very similar at least from these picts. Same tooling? I tried google translate, the plates may be a bit longer and slightly different mica, the mica can be seen in the top pict. Some hard to understand talk of poor reliability. I know from Polish friends that Poles have little love for things Russian.

Maybe old hat and already discussed here but first I've heard of the Siemens / EHX connection.

Siemens/RFT are pricey now, wonder if these are getting faked, ie re-silk-screened Ruskies?

I would be more interested to know if plates and filaments are exact same alloys.

A man from trioda used EL34 EH and had some problems with grids that were to loose and made strange sounds in His amp. They recommended reliable russians Nos tubes.

Fuggedaboutit! I doubt any tube made today meets that standard. I have my doubts about transformer iron too, to much recycled scrap all mixed in, but who knows, maybe modern is actually better. Read once about the illegal metal scrap salvage inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone. If you are very lucky your Russian tubes may have extra special super alloy!

Are the EHXs not Russian? I'm sure they are, they own Sovtek. I think every mass market tube out of Russia now is EH-Sovtek made as they are the only ones left. I also think EHX sources from other places, but I just assumed these were Sovtek made.

Been reading up, not all the Siemens are special either, just the 60s, early 70s ones it seems. Mid '90s I had 2 quads of some of the last made, couldn't bias them in a CJ-MV52, the plates glowed at whatever setting, both sets. Sent them back, used my Phillips 6CA7s, perfect. Bah, I wish it was 1965!

Make sure they have the e sufix. It's a tottaly different tube . they do seem pretty rugged I've been hammering a quad in a amp that eats modern el34s for lunch

I thought my understanding of the Siemens el34 was Ken recommended those as an alternative to the pricy NOS Mullards as folks wernt willing to pay for NOS. Siemens was fairly inexpensive for NOS and I thought that was why it got the recommendation.

Isn't that a Russian version of a 6L6?

I thought we were talking EL-34's? :D

Wow, visually the two tubes do look very similar....

EH/Sovtek also relabels this tube as a Mullard brand - I've seen both now. Of course it looks nothing like and XF1-2-3-4 Mullard, but does look like the Siemens.
