First Build. My ugly rocket!

Post by Mr Wright »

I just finished my first amp build!
RJ had most of a rocket kit for me and I got all the remaining resistors and capacitors from Mouser.
I was hesitant to try amp building at first, but all the resources here are excellent and if I can make an amp function with my awful lead dress then anyone can.

I'm conducting a poll with my friends for a name for her. As tribute to Mr. Fischer I thought it proper to give her a girl's name, and since she is ugly I thought it should be an old bag's name or a large redneck woman's name.

My favorite highlights from the poll thus far are Hortense and Euphonia. Any further suggestions are welcome!

I'm figuring out what project to work on next. I have most of the parts for an attenuator, so that is probably next. I've been obsessed with The Sword lately so I'll probably attempt some variation on a 1970's OR Orange for my next amp (probably after I read some of the TUT books I have started ordering).

Welcome...and..congratulations on your first build!

So...how does the old "hag" sound? Appearances (which are not as bad as you make them out to be) take a back seat to the tone.

Cheers,

I agree. She really looks pretty good! You might shorten the leads around v1. But only if you have trouble (if it ain't broke...).

How about Frau Blücher from "Young Frankenstein"? <Insert horse neigh>

She sounds amazing. Different breed for me. I'm mostly used to modern high gain amps, but I'm moving more away from that stuff as of the last few years.
The good, loud sound is what prompted someone to suggest "Euphonia" which is a name for a genus of neotropical birds that are notoriously loud for their size.

Good to hear positive feedback on the looks inside. My soldering skill increased throughout the build so I ended up looking back on connections I made at the start and doubting my work.

I was a little worried with my choice of heater wire. I went out to a "big box" home improvement store and got some of that brown speaker wire that you see in the pics, but there is little to no hum so I am satisfied!

Great to hear it is working for you!
I have a couple of Express style builds under my belt but have never done the Rocket. My understanding is that it takes pedals quite well.
So....a modern tone may only be a footswitch away should you want to venture back that way again!
Enjoy,
Dave O.
