Potentiometer and MOV Varistor Questions

Post by lgehrig4 »

Two simple ones for the pros

1. The Express BOM lists 2watt pots and after I purchased Alpha's I realized that they are only 1/2w(linear) and 1/4w(Audio). Do I have to use 2W or does it just list that because PEC pots are 2 watts?

2. The exact Varistor is discontinued and it is also listed as 150v on the BOM, but 130V on the layout.
a. Should I get 130 or 150V?
b. I assume this value refers to the AC voltage? Do I need
to concern myself with the DC voltage and/or Capacitance
for this part?

Thank you!

Clarostat pots are mil-spec and are also 2W. Better to use 150V MOV with today's higher line voltages. 130V back in the day, 150V for today.

To answer your question a different way, yes, you can use 1/4w Alpha pots. They're good and inexpensive.

Thanks Guys! Going back to the MOV question. Aside from 150V AC, do I need to be concerned with the DC voltage, clamping voltage or capacitance? There are 175 different 150V Varistors on Mouser's site.
