Worn power tubes are greasy!

'Had a new set of EL34B's, but was waiting to run them. 'Just biased them up at about 45ma's, and boom!; what a difference. The sound tightened right up, and was more harmonically rich.

Cool.

I like to explain power tube degradation as something like tire wear on your car. The tires wear gradually, almost imperceptably until they're really bad. If you replace them before they're really bad, you're pleasantly surprised by how quiet, smooth and sweet handling the new tires are. Only then do you realize how much comfort and performance were lost on the old tires.

New tubes are usually a pleasant experience and make me wonder if I shouldn't have changed sooner!
