Did Ken ever modify a Dr Z amp?
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
Re: Did Ken ever modify a Dr Z amp?
Tejastubes, a member here, owns the amp. Maybe he or perhaps Dr. Z will comment on this amp's history. I'll bet that amp sounds like a piano hitting the pavement from three stories up. The Stingray [sic] that Brad Paisley demos in the Dr. Z video sounds truly great.

not a lot of extra information, but there was a discussion on the z forum about this a while back.

i don't think it was ever resolved if it was played by brad on-air or was just there as a backup (doesn't mean he didn't play it at some point, just maybe not on the aired performance)

Re: Did Ken ever modify a Dr Z amp?
The 'one wire mod' is a mod most often done in Marshall Plexis where the input tube, instead of operating in parallel, is instead set up to be switchable to a higher gain arrangement via one wire, hence the name.randalp3000 wrote:care to elaborate one the one wire mod???????jelle wrote:The one wire mod that Ken did to a Dr z?

The stock Stangray is set up with an EF86 front end which goes directly to a 12AX7 phase inverter so unless the front tube was changed to a dual triode and then cascaded like the Maserati GT, or another tube was added, I'm not seeing how the mod would be a 'one wire' cascade mod.
Re: Did Ken ever modify a Dr Z amp?
Ken passed on 12-23-06, and it is noted on the Dr. Z site the he designed the OT. It may be something that simple. The sticker is very valuable at this point for sure.

Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
Re: Did Ken ever modify a Dr Z amp?
Is the sticker really Worth another $3500?

That is a quote from the Dr. Z forum link. $3500 mistake...there were 2 of these. Hubie had both & sold 1 to another player, who ultimately had it returned to stock Sting Ray circuitry.

That is a quote from the ad for this amp from a year ago. That is how much Al was asking for it then (when I assume Joshua Syna of Tejastubes bought it). I guess another year older and it is worth more than double! (I think it is $5999 in the current ebay auction but I had seen it selling a few months ago for $6500-7500).There were apparently only 2 KF modded "Stang Wrecks". the other one was supposedly returned back to stock @ request of it's owner
SOOOOOooo..... I'm lusting after Richeray's Esquire. wasn't going to sell this, but... will also incl. a complete extra set of similar NOS tubes (I pulled the originals, as a few were ringing, & boxed them for posterity). NOW $3000 +SHIPPING & PP
Re: Did Ken ever modify a Dr Z amp?
Funny! Thank you for sharing that
the part that I find as a red flag is that the amp wasn't played after the modification and only one picture? Really at least make an effort. If it was awesome I'd assume it wouldn't have left brad's collection. He loves amps and TW. It's a cool piece of history, but it's probably never going to be more sought after then a regular stangray combo. This has been proved time and time again with KF modified fx pedals. I would be willing to guess it was purchased for what it's worth $3k shipped with NOS backup tubes. I guess we'll see what the market value is in time.

Wow, zero bids. What a surprise.
The current owner tends to think ALOT of his equipment. I have seen it happen consistently here and on several other sites.
