Mercury Magnetics

Post by Tdale »

I went ahead and ordered both the PT and OT gransformer from Mercury Magnetics. Everyone I've asked, say that they are great/the best transformers, but too expencive. They sure are, but I thought that I'd go for it anyway. After all, the OT is the most important part in an amp I've been told several times...

I'll post some clips when I finish my amp. I'm building a Z-Wreck. How close is the z-wreck to a rocket?

Tdale,
I used these exact trannies in my Z wreck and couldn't be happier! I don't think you'll be disappointed. To my ears they have a very rich and full sound. I've used a lot of Mercury Iron and have nothing but praises for the iron they make.
BTW, what choke are you planning on using?

Oh ya My .02,
From my research, the z wreck is pretty close to Kenny's rocket but it has Z's twist on it. Z approached Ken I think and Ken shared his notes with Mike and spec'd the transformers for the z wreck and help design the chassis. Fwiw, I have never heard a real rocket or clone live, but the z wreck I believe is pretty darn close. Awesome amp, you'll have a hard time trying to stop playing cause I know I did and still do.

On the MM website they have Liverpool OT 5k2 and Express OT 6k6 and TW PT but I did not see a Rocket OT listed.

You couldn't go wrong using Mercury that is for sure. Some day I will break down and buy some. :)

Hey Mark - maybe they should start selling new ears to us older guys.
You got me hooked on Rockets
I've got Pacific's in my Rocket Reverb & I'm not sure it could sound any better.

Mark,
They only have the one TW OT. It has two taps: one 5.2 and one 6.6. I spoke to Patrick @ MM about the Z wreck and he thought the TW iron would work best. FWIW I used the 5.2 tap for my z wreck.
Just a side note- Patrick also told me that Sergio(mercury's Head guy) knew Ken and shelfed his propriety design once he passed.
I respect that.

Bob, yes I have 4 or 5 Rocket varieties maybe more I lost track, great amps for sure. Each one is different.

For my Zwreck I ended up using:

HTS 9144 PT 280v
HTS 8093-1 OT 4k3
Hammond 159Q choke 7h 150mA DC

Drew your liking the 5k2 in your Zwreck, great I was wondering if some were going to go that route. How choke choice?

Not sure yet. I have one, but I don't have it here, so I don't know the specs. MM recommended their choke for VOX AC30...

Do you recommend one?
