Roberto,

I tried the yellow "vintage" Jupiters...
I swapped out a few Sozos for the Jupiters, past burn in of course. I really couldn't tell much of a difference at all. Same kind of mellow. Jupiters were two to three times the cost. I got them in a week and a half though... I have waited for Sozos directly from the source for over three months with no idea of what was going on. No responses to about 10 emails or phone calls. I had given up on them and ordered some that rj had in stock instead... then one day out of the blue they were in my mailbox. I will not buy directly from them ever again. Also, close to 10% of them were no good. rj was having the same kind of problems with them at the time.

All things considered Jupiter is just better simply because of communication and all of their caps that I have received worked.
Sozo may have been cheaper but just weren't worth the trouble.

I have a wholesale deal set up with Jupiter and would get a much better deal in larger quantities... wink, wink. When I have to get mustards I will probably go with Jupiter unless I find a better deal.

Tony,

That is a bit of a worry about experiencing failed Sozo cap; I hadn't heard that before noes. I stocked up probably 6 months ago (likely more, I lose track of time) and while I did have to wait, my wait time was not as long as some and communication was good. Bummer about the quality control and customer service issues.

Perhaps it's time to look for some new mustard for my amp sandwich.

Dave,

I really think they were tired of seeing (yet not responding too) my messages and probably sent anything they had on hand to "make the angry man stop". rj was emailing and calling every day as well. I'm sure there were others, so you can imagine the pressure they were experiencing.

I do have wholesale deal set up with Jupiter... if you guys wanted to buy some to try I could make an order for the group.
I am not at liberty to post the price list but would be willing to send it via pm if requested. I am not rich by any means, so I could not make the order without the funds. I would send them wherever you guys are for the price I can get them for plus whatever it costs for shipping. I'm not here for profit... I'm only offering what I can for those interested.

I truly respect rj for the way he conducts his business and strive to treat others the same way. I may not contribute as much as others but I try to make up for it where I can...

I was tempted to try some Sozos, but was given pause when I read about others experiences. As well, even at wholesale price, they are expensive and minimum order quantity was stupid huge, especially since I just wanted to try them in my amps. I think I'll stick with STKs.

Just wondering if anyone has tried the old Mullard mustards in a Wreck? Not like I'm going to afford them even if they made me a sandwich, did my laundry and any other favor I might need. They're always supposed to be the snizzle in old original Marshalls (which is like finding a virgin in a brothel), all the Marshalls I've played are soiled doves haha, just curious if they would sound equally cool in a wreck?

Regards,

Don

I used the real NOS mustards in a expresse clone. They also need some time to break in ( about 50h ). They are realy shimmering without any harshness at all. Very good choice when you can get them.

I can't answer your first question about Mullards in a Wreck, but there is a large pool of responses that say Mullards vs. Sozo Vintage in Marshall builds resulted in no significant audible difference, so Sozos were a cost-effective alternative to getting the Mullard Mustard sound at a lower price. That consensus was formed long before the supply disruption at Sozo which resulted in about a year of extended wait times to get them (so no bias in that opinion).

Cool that you had good results with the Mullards in your build.

Has anybody tried Musicaps? I have a couple in a 5E3 clone, and they sound fine, if not a little too clean and bright. They probably need more break in time?

i tried them and remember thinking they were good in a few spots.. but overall if i was going to use just one brand cap it would be what ken used.. the mallory OD's were the best, and then just a hair behind were the sprague OD's... i don't think id like an all nos mustard express over an all OD express amp... not sure why that is, but that was just kinda what i found from listening a little... id probably have to go and try that again though :-) I use different caps in different spots in all my amps though..
