Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Ron Congratulations,
You are a much wiser man now and you've proved the circuit was correct for all of us, thanks!
I am quite anxious to hear your amp. I picked up a set of Old Stock 6L6GC's the other day and slapped them into my Rockster and they sounded great. I added a Digiverb pedal in front of it and it was just wonderful.... I can imagine with a real reverb your amp is the deal.
I know you have provided us with some good clips in the past... would be delighted to hear you play again and give us a taste of that sound.

Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Nice build Ron.
I plan to build my Rocket head without reverb 6L6 this time around and use my Boss RV pedal in front which has worked well for my gigs.
Next time will be Normster's Rocketverb.

Ron,
Glad to hear you have that amp more to your liking now. Nice work

Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Thanks guys. The Rocket circuit sure is addicting, at least to me. This is my second rocket build, for which sounds VERY similar to the first one; albeit with a slightly less sparkle. hmmmm. Perhaps I should pay better attention to that bright cap thread in the dumble forum.
I was curious and doubtful about adding reverb to a vox-type circuit; and had a few naysayers in my ear. however, I'm very glad I put it in. It really does sound fantastic with it. It's so subtle that it really only adds space and sheen to the footprint. You'd never use it for an effect perse. Anyway, I need to jam with it some more to get better acquainted.
I should be receiving the 1x12 combo (matchless style) cab I ordered from Mathercab this coming week. I'll slap in a Fane alnico I purchased from Darin. I've been playing the amp with my 2x12 closed back with scumback M75s. Very punchy with tight lowend. And grows like a mutha, the way a greenback should. So, I'm very intrigued how it will sound in an openback/alnico setup. The circuit has loads of bass, so I'm not too worried about losing any of that. My curiosity lies in that upper midrange where things can get dicey and strident. Don't want that. Hopefully the Fane will be just the ticket.

Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Now throw a little analog delay in the front and you'll be in heaven.

Normster is that Rocket Reverb layout for two EL34s available in tubes up version?
I just reversed the image but then lettering is in pig latin.

Did you try holding it up to a mirror?M Fowler wrote:Normster is that Rocket Reverb layout for two EL34s available in tubes up version?

All of my layouts are on another computer. I'm pretty sure I have two versions (flipped and normal). I'll check and post a bit later. (Swamped on a work project at the moment.)

Yeah and it broke the mirror thanks a lot Normster.
Hope you get that switch noise resolved.

Clip
I know I'm waiting for the combo cab and speaker, but I had to hear how this thing records. Here's a simple rhythm and melody clip.
The reverb was set at noon for the rhythm, and around 2:30 oclock for the melody.
1958 heavy relic Tele
All JJ tubes.

I'll try to record some heavier sound tunes. However, this thing really shines when clean or pushed into crunch. Anyway, the clip is just to give you an idea how cool the Rocket with big balls (kt-66s) sounds like.

Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Thanks Deric! I added another goofball clip. Playing around with some delay and verb. It's been a while since I've fired up protools. I forgot how much fun it is.
Yeah, the "grow me" clip is actually a song written by a friend of mine. The melody is kind of quirky on guitar...much better sung. The lyrics really do help a somewhat poor-repetitive melody
Oh well...

Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Sounds great! I was really impressed with the balance and note seperation. (Especially the chords at 1:40 in "Grow Me") The KT66s have a little softer texture than EL34s. I'll have to give them a try.
FWIW, the best speaker I've heard so far with this amp is a G12H30. I just wish they weren't so expensive.

Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Thanks Normster. That's interesting about the G12H30's. I've got a Two Rock cab loaded with them, but haven't tried that cab with this build yet. Unless you're talking about the Heritage series, the regular G12H30's are pretty reasonably priced. In fact I got my two around $75 a piece off the gear page. Darin is sending me a Fane alnico. Hopefully that will push the tones into the next level, in a good way.
You hit it with your comment about note separation. I can really notice how each string/note has a shine or texture to it. It's not sterile at all; it's just clean and present, for lack of finding a better descriptor. Dang, that tube reverb beautifully sets the footprint!

Hmmm...maybe I've been looking at the wrong speakers.rawnster wrote:Unless you're talking about the Heritage series...

Re: Rocket Combo Takes Off
Ron,
Nice clips as usual
You have finished it just in time for the Holiday season. Just wrap it up and send it my way
