WE HAVE BLOOMING
Finally got a chance to play the amp without the Mass. We have full on blooming. With the volume on 5 or higher, as lead notes fade it rolls slowly into feedback. Really nice
This one is a keeper. I'll have clips by next weekend.

That's the question -- is 2 watts low enough to keep the wife happy and to keep the dogs from getting scared. I'm thinking I might still need the VVR, but I'm definitely interested, so clips when you've got 'em please.

It depends on where you practice and how efficient your speaker is. With a greenback as long as you have a door between you and the living room they can still hear the TV. It is not so loud as to make the neighbors call the cops on you for practicing at full volume but will likely still bother the wife some.Bear wrote:That's the question -- is 2 watts low enough to keep the wife happy and to keep the dogs from getting scared. Clipps Soon
Just dropped my amp off at the music store to get some clips of my Wreck professionally done. My playing is crap. Wade, who tested it out, really liked it and though it was very punchy. Didn't quite bloom as much with the guitar he was using as it does with mine but with the volume maxed he was able to go from some really neat chicken picken to full on shred metal. Sure wish I could play like that. Guess I'll have to start hanging out at the crossroads at night
Anyway, should have some decent clips by Friday to post.
Thanks
Brian

Sound clips
Well, the clips have been delayed. The guy that runs to studio at the music store was out all week. Wade, who is doing the guitar work for me wants to do some really nice clips with a miked cab so he has been waiting for the studio guy to get back in town. I have been burned many times before by people who say they will make clips but just keep the amp for a week. To make sure I get clips I gave him an amp of mine he has been eyeballing that I built a couple of years ago. Hope to have something by Wednesday. Sorry for the delay.
Thanks

Here are some pics of Cliff Chappell's build. Notice the abaloni inlay. He is doing some amazing work. http://www.chappellamps.com

Here is the clip I promised. He gets a little over the top with the heavy but the cleans are real nice. I suspect he had the volume dimed when he recorded it.
Thanks

That dude can play!!!
The amp sounds nice too...wowzers
What are your opinions of the lowend when the distortions is kicking hard? Is it thick enough?

Oh yes. The 6sn7 does very well in the bottom end. My October~Studio with a 6SN7 and an EZ80 for the rec. tube has a tight fat bottom end too.Abstract wrote:That dude can play!!!

Duplicate post
Yeah!!!
Brian, it sounds terrific. Any idea what guitar and speaker were used?
Is it just me or is there a particular bell-like chimey sound to all 6SN7 amps, like in your clean samples?
I get a somewhat similar sound from the uTube build at clean volumes, but the driven sound is no where near as smooth.
So now, how would you compare the Wreckless (soundwise) to the Studio? (clips pleeeze...?)
I expect to pick up a messed up Blues Jr in a couple of weeks, that should make a decent donor platform for building something like this. Now I am really chomping at the bit.
I will be on the lookout for your schematics...
Where do you go from here for your next project?

Re: Yeah!!!
No but I'll ask at lunch when I pick up the amp.mss1 wrote:Brian, it sounds terrific. Any idea what guitar and speaker were used?
To a certian extent. There are three main types of NOS 6sn7GTB, and you have to use a GTB for the extra voltage capacity. The RCA, Sylvania, and Tung Sol. The Tung Sol tall bottle is what you are hearing. It is very chimy and bell like. The RCA is a bit darker and bigger on the bottom end. The Sylvania is inbetween the two.mss1 wrote:Is it just me or is there a particular bell-like chimey sound to all 6SN7 amps, like in your clean samples?
That is Cliff's PI adding the smoothness. Cliff and I are in the process of doing some minor tweaks to make it even smoother.mss1 wrote:I get a somewhat similar sound from the uTube build at clean volumes, but the driven sound is no where near as smooth.
I don't dare go there on this forum. They are both great amps and I'm glad I have bothmss1 wrote:So now, how would you compare the Wreckless (soundwise) to the Studio? (clips pleeeze...?)
Schematic will be out as soon as Cliff tries a few final tweaks. Once I have my mini-wreck in a proper cab, I'm building a clean 20 watt PP amp and running my mini-wreck and October through it with some sort of channel switching. I call it the Stack-O-Heads.mss1 wrote:I expect to pick up a messed up Blues Jr in a couple of weeks, that should make a decent donor platform for building something like this. Awesome! I want to build one of these now! (add it to the list of stuff I don't have time for).
