The key is getting the holes in the faceplate to match up as close as possible to the pot shafts. If the holes are too large you can see the front of the chassis through the gap. I use a 18" drum sander to get the desired thickness on the faceplate. My preference is a tad less than 1/8". You can take it all the way down to 1/16" but the wood looses much of its strength and will crack easily..
I'm thinking you must be using different pots then what came with my Ceriatone. With the 1/8" faceplate, the threads end just about flush with the top of the wood. No way to get a nut on there...let alone washer and nut.

Also, I'm wondering if the latest Ceriatone chassis are thicker. Mine has welded corners and is pretty strong.

On a personal note. I got into a car accident tonight. I'm a little sore from the lash of impact, but OK. My car on the other hand is toast. So this weekend will probably be spent getting a rental car and possibly shopping for a new car if the insurance companies take care of things quickly enough. I was hoping to hit some lumber stores and pick up some exotic stock, assuming they had any *in* stock. I might have to put this project off for a little bit till I can get my car situation worked out.

If Nik has changed the thickness of his chassis walls that might be causing your problems.
The only thing I can say for sure is all the faceplates I have built were just shy of 1/8" and they all fit without recessing .
My faceplates have also fit original Trainwrecks.
Have you contacted Nik?
