Not sure if its the same thing but something called Soldering Paste. Comes in a tin box. Makes the solder point neat but leaves gooey residue.

Ok. Mosfet in, Full VVR, G to B+ reads 146 VDC , no crack bang boom. Wait 30 seconds, all ok, wind down VVR, G to B+ nicely go down all the way to 100VDC. Exact same pattern when btoh my amps were tested ok and worked fine. I think I'm out of the hot water for now. Proceeding to do some more cleaning with iso just for safety and then sound check with the tubes on!!!

*** UPDATE *** - Houston, we have lift off!!! Sounds great! Just like before. Will go back and clean both amps one more time just to be sure.

Dana, great support as always. Thanks for working through the timezones and helping me troubleshoot this one step at a time. I hope this experience helps other newbies building your amp avoid problems like mine and also provide a path for troubleshooting for them. Hope I didn't take too much of your time over the weekend.

All other forum members who contributed... thank you so very much as well. Its great to know there are many people who know their stuff out there and care to share with others. Great community. Thank you!!!

MCK,

Good news for you! Excellent learning experience as well.

FYI, you can find flux remover in some supply houses. Usually acetone will work better than alcohol. Flux can become conductive, especially with high voltage.

Enjoy the amp!

UR12 wrote:... Also measure your heater voltage at the 2 green wires going onto the main board. These normally measure 6.3VAC. I am going to make a guess that you will be down around 5vac with 100v input to the tranny and that is not good for the tubes. The tubes can run fine on 147VDC but they need a full 6vac on the heaters.
Dana, after all is said and done I recalled your comment so checked the heater voltage and found you were not far off. It reads 5.23VAC. Should I ground the amps till I can get the new PT or do you think the tubes will be ok for some light use (ie 1 hour daily or so). All the best.

mdd1959, thanks for your kind words. I will try to find the flux remover you mention. My wife tells me there is no real acetone in the market anymore but some other chemical substitute. Not sure if its good as well. Take care.

Has anyone heard from UR12? I've been trying to contact him for two weeks or so and no reply on E-mail. Is he on vacation or something? I'd like to order a Lil Devil kit.

Wishing him or his a quick recovery and all the best. I think he is still offline. Mail to him is bouncing with a mailbox full message.

Thanks. I'd rather not bother him now. Nothing urgent. I was just wondering about his new PTs which can handle 100V input. Not an urgency at all. Better let him deal with his family matters at hand.
