Yeah, I used a dealer for my Rocket OT (Vox Woden-clone) and it was under $200 shipped.

Still, you can get a set of Pacifics, which were actually used in real wrecks, for about $200 shipped. Why pay that for just an OT? The MM guys are nice folk, make a good product, but you are paying for a name that isn't even associated with wrecks.

I completely understand that, however I don't feel that because it's MM, that it's worth the extra cash. I always say, use what you like, so if MM transformers trip your trigger, more power to ya.

FWIW I have made several clones and I only have used MM iron so I really can't compare it to anything.
I did however replace the OT, PT and choke with MM in my Hot Rod deluxe and the tone was night and day.
Just a rocket? I figured there was a tweak or two to the preamp circuit. Anyone here use o/Netics iron? I used it for a 5c1 that I built and really like it. I don't have experience with heyboer, triode electronics, or mercury magnetics though.
I have looked but haven't been able to find any info on an octal Wreck style amp. Can someone point me in the right direction?
crafty1, I see where you use the term 'night and day', as does another poster about MM iron I think. ? I love that folks are sticking their necks out so far to say these things - I look for this kind of thing when I make a purchase.
However, let's turn this into a number '10' kinda thing? and let's say that the replacement iron was a '10'. If the new iron is a '10' how would you rate the old iron, a '5' or less? I ask because I say 'night and day' myself and to me it means comparing say '10' to '1' or something like that. Help me out and qualify your feeling about the iron a little more.
FWIW, I have hesitated buying the 470 RI iron because I had an orignal version in a 2/EL34 amp and swapped it out for a Heyboar Bluesbreaker KT66 OT and thought the amp sounded better. And of course it could always be the 470/Rocket thing that is so special. Just askin for more confirmation here, that's all.

I am a huge Mercury Magnetics fan yes as you probably can tell from my previous post. The iron really changed my HRD a lot for the better IMHO. The cleans sounded a lot more full and thick and had a lot more sustain.
This came at a pretty steep cost as we all know Mercury Iron is not cheap.
FWIW I have torn the HRD amp apart to put a lower wattage circuit in that combo as I couldn't live with constant issues with the PCB that I had in that amp.
I recently bulit a TW Liverpool and used Pacific Iron and I also built my spin on a Z-wreck using the mercury TW iron. I realize that these are different circuits altogether and each have their own idosyncrasies but I wouldn't say the MM iron sounds like its worth $300 more in this application.
Mercury makes a fine visually appealing product but are not the be all and end all of transformer iron....again IMHO.
Long story short, it made a huge improvement in my HRD as that fender iron looks and sounds pretty cheap altogether but I can't say you'd notice it every application.
Now... I really should swap iron in my liverpool and do a sound demo.... that would really help us here.

I think the mercury magnetic products sound great, but I did have some issues with the filament supply on one of their power transformers sagging to low to mid 5 volts at a current draw of only about 75% of the rated filament current. It was a 100w plexi power transformer. I had bought an un-built Metro Marshall plexi kit from the original owner, the kit was several years old so I did not pursue any warranty claims. It just surprised me a bit.
I think Heyboer and Edcor are great products for the money and for budget builds Antec toroid power transformer work great.
