Home-made cab for you to scoff :-D

I'm so cheap.'' Genuine Southeast Texas pine. It should have been an old Telecaster. I am trying to decide on a finish. Pine just doesn't stain well on darker colors. I will probably go with Amber shellac(like the inside of Grandpa's old beach cabin) or a pickled finish. Urethane would hold up better to beer cans however. I have tried the spray cans of bed liner & did not have good results. I guess a shop could do a great job though. I've seen a Hughes & Kettner amp done that way. It looked quite durable.

Do an oil finish then use hardwax. Super easy. Looks great. And repairs like a charm.
Here's the large version of my avatar which is mahogany with a oil/wax french polish thing.

That is cut circuit taken from the Komet. After building I realized it wasn't very necessary. Maybe useful with bright speakers or 6v6s. My amp seems harsh with 6v6s. I think I will pull it & install a PPIMV.

Now, we've got a great combo for cabs: FLOORS and DRAWERScaptain_rusty wrote: .. the face section is bamboo floor tiles...
Roll-on bed liner from your local auto parts store gives a much more even and better looking finish. The foam roller is the key.Buschman wrote: ...I have tried the spray cans of bed liner & did not have good results...

Hehe... the pragmatic approach...

Hardwax is a type of finish that you can get at any woodworking store. A french polish is using oil and wax for a fine luster.
Funny enough, this little cab is my main gigging cab at the moment. Sounds great and has been bomb proof so far. It looks a bit dull now, but a fresh once over with some lemon oil will bring back that shine.

That's some fantastic mahogany you found for that! I've been admiring your avatar since I first got to these forums.
Question for you guys doing the mitered and butted corners. What's holding them together? Just glue?? Or do you have those cool wafer cutting tools?

Me?
I glue, 3" floor screw it, sand it and it goes on to the dye department.
I use my own dye and oil finish with nuts imported from India...

I use biscuits for the sake of ease and strength. They are actually stronger than box or dove tails, however this will insight an argument.
The nice thing is that I do not have to worry about possible tear out from cutting the box or dove tail joints. I do these at times, but it's always a crap shoot if it's work right the first time. It's a shame to waste nice figured woods, so biscuits are an idiot proof solution.
It is a nice piece of Mahogany isn't it. I've got another really sweet 10' x 11" mahogany board that has some really cool figure to it.

I just used a small nail gun & glue. I'm afraid I have more of a mechanics shop than a wood shop. I probably need to put some screws in it so it does not come apart.

That should be good enough...if strong glue is used...Buschman wrote:I just used a small nail gun & glue. I'm afraid I have more of a mechanics shop than a wood shop. I probably need to put some screws in it so it does not come apart.

I might need to look into the biscuit jointer tool. I have a vintage table saw that I've tweaked pretty well, but my router died. So I'm considering this as an inexpensive alternative to a new high end router and dovetail jig.dartanion wrote:I use biscuits for the sake of ease and strength. I tried finger joints on my table saw, but I kept wearing out jig I built and the joints would get looser and looser till they were just no good anymore. For a while I was making Super Reverb cabs for myself and people. I LOVE my Super Reverbs...
I'll have to hit a hardware store tonight and see how much the biscuit tool is.

Check with Amazon.com as I got a nice Porter Cable biscuit joiner plus a whole mess of biscuits for about $200. You can get them cheaper, but the PC unit is bomber.
All the car audio guys use nail guns and glue on MDF. Pretty sturdy, but not totally bomb proof. This is more due to the nature of MDF.

If it's Honduras you may want to save it for guitars. It will be added to the endangered list soon along with Brazilian Rosewood and alot of other musical instrument woods. Either that or make a 2X12 cab so you can bust it up later for the wood.dartanion wrote:It is a nice piece of Mahogany isn't it.
