Well at band practice I tend to have the attenuator set to quarter power and then I use a rheostat to bring it down a smidge more. So quite attenuated. At home I have it turned down as far as it'll go.

I guess another option would be the scumback speakers as they do supply a 65W version of the G12M. I am hoping that one day my band will get big enough to start playing big outdoor gigs where I'll need a 4X12 Cab. Could fill it with Greenbacks then.

I'll have to measure the output of the amp after attenuation, would be interesting.

if you are attenuating it that much I bet you are hardly pushing 10w out the speaker, bare in mind 10 - 18w is enough clean for most band practice environments, unless you playing metal, which I assume you re not, so two G12M would be fine, also like I said earlier, you can turn the attenuator up a bit too then.... and another bonus when you make it big time you can use the two in your new 4 x 12 cab.

What attenuator are you using?

Another excellent "high power Greenback" to consider is the new Celestion Creamback 65. IMHO the high end is sweeter and smoother with the smaller 25 watt M magnet speakers (such as the Creamback 65) vs the H models. The low end is also woodier sounding, and only gets mushy if you really push them which I don't think you will need to do. A Scumback M75 might also work well for you.

Definitely no Metal! More of a rock n roll/blues player.

I'm using an attenuator that I had built for me. You have two inputs, one is half power and the other is quarter power. You then have a rheostat that you use to turn it down even more. Its an excellent design as the impedance is matched perfectly throughout the entire range. No bright cap. Its also got two rheostats hooked up to a relay controlled by a footswitch, so I can set one higher than the other and switch to it for a solo. Was only £100 if I remember rightly.

I think its probably quite clear that I'm not pushing the speakers hard enough to compress or smooth out the high end. I might just have to live with it until I can afford new speakers or until my band does large enough venues that warranty turning it up.

Or go the Joe Bonamassa route and add a plexiglass screen in front of your speaker cab. Then turn that attenuator up some more. Most sound shite turned down much.
