Mark,
I really like the 5.2k n the z wreck. I started out using the mercury jmi-30 choke which was a 20h and 150 ma i believe. To my ears it was a little dark sounding so I followed suit and tried the 159Q. The amp seemed to brighten up a fair bit with the hammond and just seems livelier! Good call with that choke.
Now if I could only get my liverpool to behave as well as the z wreck!

Re: Mercury Magnetics
Tommy MM states good for TW Express, Liverpool or Rocket since the OT is dual HT 5k2 and 6k6. So that would be a good choice.
Drew I might try that 5k2 in a zwreck and see what the difference would be compared to my 4k3 Dynaco clone. I did use a Hammond 158L choke in another build but wished I had stayed with the 159Q as I think that 159Q choke is better suited.
Ah the liverpool amps I have my first TW liverpool amp all torn down and rebuilding it completely but I am sure I will use Pacific iron for it.

Do the output impedances 4,8,16 stay the same, no matter what primary you use (5,2 / 6,6) ? If so...how does that work?M Fowler wrote:Tommy MM states good for TW Express, Liverpool or Rocket since the OT is dual HT 5k2 and 6k6. So that would be a good choice.

I haven't read where you need to use a different tap when going from 5k2 to 6k6.

Re: Mercury Magnetics
Tdale,
my choice in choke would definitely be the hammond 159Q. I have the JMI-30C from mercury as well and I like it but found it a little dull with the z wreck.. I used the jmi-30c in my stangray and love it in that amp but the z-wreck is a different beast it would seem.
Obviously tone is all in the ear of the beholder but my ears the 159Q was brighter, had more life and the breakup was a little crispier. I'm a huge Mercury fan as I have bought a lot of their iron and don''t have a negative thing to say about them. They have helped me select a lot of Iron for all my amps and Patrick really know his stuff.
If you already ordered the mercury jmi-30c i'd say try it out for a month or so, get a feel for the amp and then maybe try another choke if your not happy.
Keep me posted or PM me if you want.

Re: Mercury Magnetics
I just figured that higher impedance meant more turns of wire, making the secondaries different... I need to read more OT theory
Haven't ordered a choke yet, but will go for 159q i think. I have a Fender replacement, NSC125C1A, but that wont work, will it?

Re: Mercury Magnetics
Tommy I know what your saying but I haven't heard the AC30, DRZ or TW builders note paying attention to use of other secondary taps when shifting from 5k2 to 6k6 or reverse.
Some are using a switch to toggle between 5k2 and 6k6. Not sure if they are adjusting impedence match as well.

Re: Mercury Magnetics
Do you know if there is a big difference in sound when you toggle between the two primaries?
