Plexi and UR12 transformers for Trainwreck type amps?

Post by Mark »

I was wondering how you guys are going with coming up with a better output transformer for an Express or Liverpool amp?

I was wondering if anyone else has come up with a suitable transformer for 2 X EL-84's or 2 X 6V6's?

Good luck with the project.
Yours Sincerely

Mark

We are still testing. I just got 2 in last week but I haven't had a chance to get one in an amp yet. I'll keep ya posted.

Hmm, I thought that Moose's were pretty close to the Trainwrecks? Granted default tubes were 2 EL-34 and 4 EL-84 and not the 2 6v6/2el84.

Yes, Moose's trannys are the stuff if you want to build a TW exactly like the way Ken did and use both the 6v6 and El34 tubes. Richie and I are experimenting with a few different Primary imps with varying B+ voltages. Just an experiment and nothing else. I'm just trying to figure out why Ken went with what he did.

Mojo buys from Moose? Is the gentleman named Moose the proprieter of Toneslut?'Cause by god I needed the set too! I really will be OK with the Traynor donor I was planning to use all along. It's just in the last few days I chose to err on the correct side & start with known values out the gate. To the victor nes pas? Noel Grassy

I got some from him just before his break (5-19 June). He should be back in business; no mention of sale to Mojo?

I'm still around -- though I am down to 2 power trannies with one possibly spoken for and for output trannies. I'll have more as soon as Heyboer can take care of me, probably in a couple of weeks.

The 4K 40 watter that Mojo bought don't have anything to do with me as I don't sell anything other than the 'wreck trannies.

And, yes, I am the proprietor of ToneSlut.

For the new folks who don't know me, ToneSlut is the name of my hobby company where I make an occasional custom amp for a local player and do crap like cap jobs or swapping guitar pickups so I have an excuse to fry my brain with solder fumes and play with cool instruments and amps.

Even with the transformers, I'm not a retail business per-se and don't make much of a profit off these trannies. After all is said and done, I get to keep about 1 out of 20, sometimes two if you count the ones where Fedex dings an endbell and sticks me with a usable but unsellable tranny. Basically, I picked up the Heyboer line when the previous distributor stopped carrying them so folks on this group would have them available at a reasonable cost and in a reasonable time frame.

I apolgize for not living up to the second half of that at the moment, by the way. When this deal started, I shipped a couple per month. All of the sudden, around March of this year, things started getting crazy. I sold half my stock in about 2 weeks and was left in the cold. I ordered extras this time and was being very careful watching my stock depletion rate, expecting to run out at the end of July.

Well, it happened again at the beginning of this month when I got a huge surge of business including a dozen requests in a very short period, and right at a time where my real job had me roaming all over the world for three weeks. By the time I came back home, I was scrambling again and a couple weeks behind in ordering on transformers AND boxes!

I would like to echo what Moose was saying. I am in the same boat. This is a hobby for most of us and we aren't in the "Business" per say. It takes a LOT of time and Money up front to stock, especially Trannys, and when you work a full time job and do this stuff on the side there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day. I too have fallen behind on orders also waiting on Phenolic and turrets for the boards I built. It seems no matter how well you try and plan on keeping things in stock you find yourself scrambling at times to try and keep up.

Personally I have decided to quit taking orders and will make up boards when I have time and post them for sale here from now on when I have them already made up and in stock. Neither Moose or myself make a lot of money from the parts we sell, but I get satisfaction out of seeing the amps you guys are creating using my hand made boards and make enough money to offset some some of my own amp building projects.

Allyn has also stocked some parts from recent buyouts and is sharing his stash with the rest of us at very economical prices. Some of this stuff is impossible to find. So for the newbies, please cut these guys some slack and appreciate the fact that these guys have already done the leg work for us and are taking their time to help the rest of build some great amps. That is one of the things that makes this forum so great. 8)
