Finally building my Airbrake! Built my chassis box today, getting feet at the local electronics store tommorow, awaiting parts from Mouser and Allied. I'm stoked! The one You Tube sample I could find sounded good but I didn't think the guy did the best job demonstrating it.


How are those Lorlin switches holding up for you guys?
I've dealt with Lorlin switches once, having replaced one in a newer Vox AC 30. I've got one coming, but I'd like a simple identical lug pattern upgrade replacement part # as a back up plan...too much strain on my noodle figuring out switches....

I don't post often here but I do value my membership......
I just read and learn.....I've built 3 amps but just havn't yet gotten the gonads to attempt a TW build..........

No worries on the Lorlin switch. Hell, Kenny used them in his later amps.
If money is no object, always go for the Goldhill rotary switches! I like their tiny rotary switches in guitars and F/X pedals. NASA likes 'em too. The in between priced mfg. would probably be the current Electroswitch models being sold by Allied & Mouser IIRC.

Yes my head hurts looking at the configurations for rotary switches too! I believe "poles" = "decks" in the case of multiple stacked rotary switches. Any of the wiser members should march in here and lambaste my utter foolishness if I am mistaken on any of these suggestions. I like learning this way rather than the more expensive method [blowin' $hit up really sucks!].

Yep, I went for the switch on the layout for that very reason...(blowin sh!t up) I'll be staying away from allied whenever possible. Mouser didn't have the L100J25RE in stock----so the 10.00 part cost me 20.00 with a friggin handling charge in addition to shipping..So being I bent my own Chassis I'm a 100.00 into the thing.......With all the shipping and Allieds handling of 3 plus dollars.........

Yer still money ahead if that's any consolation...I saw a used one at TGP going for $185 shpd. That's plain nuts. There's a Matchless one there now going for the same money...I put a fan in mine as a nod to the Matchless & to prevent any liable actions should someone do something asinine. I'm curious to power it with the OT's voltage but need to confirm this as "do-able" in the Technical section.

Those shipping charges will soon be the death of me. Especially when it looks like someone is trying to retire off my sole purchase. Luckily we're not in Australia or a Euro country[Italy comes to mind] that can tack on duties & other suspect crimes.

Hey Noel. Excuse my ignorance but what is that fancy connector going into the top of your Airbrake.....Is that AC power for your fan or a fancy Input/ouput.....I used to work for the Navy and it looks like something I might of seen on a ship! The connector partially seen and cover)
I have a couple of fans similar to that laying around somewhere, but I'm guessing if Ken didn't install a fan it doesn't need one. I left ventilation on the ends of my box..(Installed partial sides) I don't really save anything building a chassis,being the time it takes to build one, in reality I'm money behind<(on the chassis that is) if I count my labor! I kind of like building chassis boxes.
(not that I'm really good at it)

As for the unit as a whole--------
Yeah I know I'm money ahead, and I understand the cost of shipping, but handling pisses me off, just the principal of it.

I paid good money for a THD hotplate, that I never was
completely happy with..beyond the 2nd attenuation setting it sucked to much tone...I always needed a setting between the 1st and 2nd for the 100 watter I was playing at the time. I play mostly 18 watters these days and don't need attenuation. With the Airbrake I'll start playing my 50 watt Marshalls more often....The hot plate probably would of been OK too with a 50 watter.

Ken Fisher said run EL84 amps w/ 16ohm cabinet at 8 ohms-----If I'm running it into a 8 Ohm cabinet should I run the amp on the 4 ohm speaker setting?

How about 50 watt Marshalls-I have a 74 1987 and a 77 2204...16 ohms for 16 ohm cabinet?

I had to have Mouser send me another Lorlin switch.....I got the wrong part......I had no record to check back to see if it was my mistake or thier's, being I didn't log in when I made the order......I called them and they sent me the replacement switch free of charge.....So props to Mouser---very decent of them, when it was likely my fault..
I feel like I owe them a little plug here..............

So I assembled my Airbrake today...........Man am I pleased.......That was a hundred bucks well spent......I even like the bedroom level setting....I like and respect Andy Marshall, but this unit sounds better than a THD...
Thanks again for passing on the Info here......It's brough back two 70s Marshalls back from being decorations.....
