The Differences in the Express, Liverpool and Rocket?

Post by GrungeMan »

What are the differences in the Express, Liverpool and Rocket.
I know what the power tubes are on all the amps, and I'm familair with the Kelley Express schem.
I can't open up the Mark Abbott adobe schems for the Liverpool because it freezes up my computor, then it tells me to notify Microsoft.
(Yuk hate computors!)
Can someone enlighten me on the layouts of the Liverpool and Rocket?
Thanks

A total layman's point of view. The Liverpool is a EL84 version of the Express same over the top gain sensitivity and responsiveness. The Rocket is much tamer more like a hot rodded AC30 chimmy grind with bass that boggles the mind and a gorgeous clean tone with the guitar turned down. I want one of each.

Thanks for the response 908ssp.
Any idea what the B+ voltages are for both the Liverpool and Rocket with and without tubes?
Seems to me the power supply is the same on 2 of the 3 TW's.
Are Power Trannies the same for these two or are they the same on the Express and Liverpool?
Thanks

The Liverpool and Rocket run about the same voltages. Since the Rocket uses a tube rect it is probably a little less maybe about 15 volts or so less. They are both in the ballpark between 310 and 340v using 260v taps on Moose's tranny. Moose included both 260v and 300v taps so the same tranny can be used in all 3 amps. Same thing with Mooses OTs, they can be used in all 3 amps. The Express was designed with a lower B+ so either EL34s or 6V6s can be used and it usually comes in about 380 - 400V. Transformers are usually in the 20% tolernance range so your voltage may vary between the ranges I posted.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply Dana.
Is the Express Lite over at the Blue Guitar site the Rocket?
If so, what is the "Input Trim" I've never seen that before, for that matter the "Conjuctive Filter" either.
If anyone has a layout or schem of their "Rocket Build" please let me know, or send it to my email addy.
Thanks

How close to a Liverpool tone can you get by cathode biasing the pair of EL34's in an Express? I know there are different values in the PI and a lower B+, but just thinking out loud: How hard would it be to add a cathode bias switch and a low-voltage (select the lower transformer tap) switch on an Express build, and how close would it be to a Liverpool? Anybody been there?

No offence but would it be too much trouble to ask you to start a new post, it really has nothing to do with my question.
Thanks

I have no idea regarding the Express Lite. The rocket schematic done by Mark Abbott is posted in the files section and is the one I would use. Mark has always been on the money. I can tell you that the rocket doesn't use a conjunctive filter or a trim control. Just Vol,Treble, Bass and a Hi cut control and that's it. Here is a link to the rocket schematic

I'm not sure regarding the layout of the power supply board but you could probably get by with an Express power supply and leave the solid state diodes off.
