"We don't need no tone control..."
So I've been having a tough time getting my 'wreck tamed. I was seeing some strange distortion coming out of my tone stack, so to sort of divide and conquer, I routed my input directly to the second stage, bypassing the tone and volume controls. I like it. It still gives plenty of gain, and with the .022/150k high pass filter, the EQ is just about perfect.
This gives me an idea for a miniwreck. I was thinking about using the second two stages of a wreck, combined with a tweaked PI running into a 6SN7 as a power tube. Sort of wreck meets moonlight. Put a herzog type line out on it and you could have a mean little practice amp, as well as a 'wreck distortion pedal.

Sounds like a killer project!

Hey Lefty!
I built a Moonlight powerstage, Express preamp, and it rawks big time. It sounds pretty amazing thru a 4x12 even.
Do a search on posts under my handle and you'll spot the pics... I have the 6SN7 twin triodes in push-pull for power and a 6SL7 as the PI. The rest is stock Express. The amp is cathode biased just like the Moonlight, and uses a Heyboer 18 watt OT.
I think if I did it again, I'd skip the 6SL7 and use a standard 12AX7 to keep the noise level down...

Yes, I was thinking about this for the power section:

What did you have to do to adapt the PI to the Express preamp?
I have a bunch of NOS 12SN7's and some of the EH12V transformers. Could be interesting.

I just used the stock Moonlight PI values as I recall... And the whole shebang is powered by an old Triad PT 260-0-260 @ 100 ma...

Hi there - been a lurker for a while doing some reading. Are you all talking about a low power "Wreck"?? I'm looking at building something that will really go into a smooth but serious overdrive / distortion at low volume levels - enough to get over a drum set but not part everyone's hair in the front row. Maybe into a 10 or 12" speaker.
Is what you are doing along these lines?
Ive built two GDS based 18watters which I modded with Presence and NFB and they sound really great, but you have to crank them to get the burn and they are just too loud for church or small rooms.
If this is the amp I'm looking for where can I get some information on what you are doing??
Thanks, Steve

Yes, I've been playing with a design that could either be used as a low power amp (around 1 watt), but also has post-transformer output suitable to be run into a larger amp. I'm still prototyping at this point. I hope to have more details this weekend. Something along the lines of a wreck preamp run into a power amp like this:

Hi Steve,
you might want to look at a single ended express inspired amp. Look in the files section and look for derailment. Might be what you're looking for. I have such a beast at home (and it just got a cab!). I'll have to record some more sound clips.
