20W Express 2-12 Combo ++ Clips Added ++

Post by sst4270 »

This is a 20W (6V6 based) Express inspired 2-12 Combo.
Other than some of the typical high gain hiss there is virtually zero hum.
Hall Electronics VVR - Scumbacks in the cabinet.
I'll be recording some clips tomorrow night and post on Tuesday.
When I initially fired her up she was very unstable. Too far over the edge for my taste. I relocated some wires and it helped tame her, but then on a whim I swapped in a pristine NOS GE 12AY7 into V1. That got'er did!

So V1 - GE 12AY7, V2 - TungSol 12AX7, V3 - Telefunken 12AX7
V4,5 - JJ 6V6's.

For your viewing pleasure.... Enjoy.

Steve,

I like that alot, good job. Now I may have to re-tolex my Line6 Express cab yours looks so good. edit: Wow that is one healthy sized PT you got there. Like the enclosed ends on your chassis allowing you to put the power board there. I ran out of space fast in mine.

Very neat and tidy build! :D

I like the amp covering, sort of PRS there.

Yes some very massive trannys.

Looking forward to the clips. :D

I see more and more guys using the JJ cap cans.

I used one on my last build as well, seem to work fine. :D

How was the faceplate done?Thanks.

20W TW express combo construction

Post by sst4270 »

Thanks guys.

I had the faceplate made by: www.exactbuilt.com
They're in Vermont. I delt with a really nice guy named Michael.

After building with Hammond and then a couple of Allyn's chassis I'm now making my own chassis. I have access to a CNC. I model all my amps using Pro Engineer, and that lets me program the machine to cut every last little hole then have a friend bend it up for me on a large hydraulic brake. I make the sides and weld them on last.
Always trying to improve the chassis making process. It's far from perfect, but improving.

Yes. I was definitely inspired by the PRS amps.

Steve,

Please don't hesitate to think about me/ampgarage members also, when you built more chassis, as I am always looking for chassis options both the combo 18w size and 36w size as well as head 17x8x2. Some of the empty Dr Z head cabs I have need 2.5 inch chassis. Again very nice build. 8)

I can't tell from the pictures but how are the sides connected to the chassis.

Are they separate pieces? One picture looks like you have silver caulk or something in the angles. Or is that a heli weld?
Is that how they are held on?

Chassis Construction

Post by sst4270 »

The sides are welded on "so to speak".

I've tried my hand at TIG welding and found it to be just too awkward.
So I use "Durafix".
It's considered 'low temp' welding. It's more like soldering than welding.
But you use a simple propane torch and the Durafix stick. The problem is that it pools like solder. So as you can see from the pictures there are places where it built up rather heavily, but the joints are incredibly strong if you get good flow.
As I pointed out earlier. I'm getting better at it, but I've got a long way to go before I'll be completely satisfied.

To that end I wouldn't want to make blank chassis for anyone until I'm happy with the end product. It may take a year before that happens.

The chassis is definitely functional. And it's nice that all the holes are done (for my specific needs anyways) So I don't have to go back and drill extra holes while in the middle of constructing the amp.
It's just not clean like Allyn's chassis for instance. I'll be satisfied when I can get to that point with my chassis.

Regards,

Steve

That Durafix sounds interesting.

Man, I just watched the video about the Durafix welding, that is a real cool product.

Looks like ExactBuilt used your faceplate as their example. :D

Mind if I ask how much they charged to make the faceplate?

Clips

Post by sst4270 »

Sorry. No clips until Friday.

Just from me twiddling around, though, you're gonna love it when I get a real guitarist hooked up to this thing.
