Use PM for further Comet discussions

Post by Allynmey »

Maybe we should use PM for further Comet discussions. I don't want to weberize Omar! Seems Hogy has been lurking and maybe was pointed to recent conversations by certain members here. :?

Seems ridiculous that someone thinks they designed an empty aluminum box without holes or anything else but there it is. Seems equally silly that people use other peoples designs -or- any tube circuit for that matter and thinks they are the inventor of any tube circuit. I don't particularly know anyone who builds there own amps would spend $3500 for a Branded amp anyway. We, as amp builders, have such an advantage. We can take a design that is locked in by advertising, Improve it an use it and enjoy it.

I don't live in China, won't be making a kit or finished amps for cheap retail and pose no threat to anyone. I don't think anyone here meets that criteria either. This thread might be a good place to have a civil discussion about the subject if Omar thinks it is OK.

I have no problem with any discussions about Komets here.
I accepted the posting of pictures, though I didn't like it.

The line I draw is simple. The Komet is a currently produced amp. It's also the livelihood for a couple of guys. I know where the "I'm just making one for myself" argument leads, the same was said when the Trainwreck cloning began, now it's an industry with plenty of builders selling clones commercially, and even parts dealers selling complete kits.

I recall a similar situation some time ago when a parts vendor had a run of Soldano chassis "cloned" and Mike Soldano put a stop to it.

So, in closing, discuss away. You can be cute and misspell the name if you wish. However, start having "Komet clone" parts made and I'll be there.

That's all. Be creative, do your own thing. If it's just a plain old box, then don't call it a "Komet chassis". Just make your own the way you think it should be done. The satisfaction factor will be much higher to boot.

Hogy, I understand your concern and for the most part, with respects to commercial cloners, I agree. I don't think the commercial cloners are the people on this site. Speaking for myself, I like building amps. I don't sell them. Hell, I haven't even gigged in 7 years! I do however have a collection of my favorite amps in my basement for myself. No new information is posted here that hasn't been available either here in the past or posted somewhere on the internet. With respects to the chassis, the person mentioned is just a welder and makes blank, unmachined boxes for diy-ers. The discussion was about a certain amp and I, yes me, not him, called it a "K" chassis. He doesn't even know what a "Komet" is! What he knows is that I asked for a blank box of a certain dimension and thickness and he asked if I could order a couple to put off the expense of non-standard stock. There is no conspiracy here and to tell you the truth I don't even know if I'd like the amp. I also know two people who have bought your amp and are happy with it. They are currently working on cloning it for a gigging amp. They are afraid to take a $3500.00 amp to gigs! also, they cannot afford to buy a second one. One person is in another country and would cost hundreds to ship for repair. I am interested in having your point of view expressed here. I think it shows your character to come here and discuss this as a gentleman. Thank you.

I take that back...No "gentleman" sends a cease and desist letter to a man and threatens him baselessly and further aggrevates his situation while he cares for his wife with cancer.

hehe this is so great a cloned amp the komet wants ppl to ...not clone it? why would you want to clone one anyhow ...just clone the express. marshalls are clones of fenders and fenders were licenced by rca, schematics were anyhow...lol but that was back when valves were introduced.... has anyone counted the total parts in any of thes amps? we're not talking designing some high tech component here; each gain stage has less than ten parts so with 5 gain stages ...you get about 50 parts plus some extra bits for power rail and tone networks so under 100 parts..what's to clone LOL. helll you could get the old data shets for 12ax7's and el34's and come up pretty close without pictures ...then fine tune the rest by hand...sounds like every non comercial botique amp ever built. hope ppl are not crazy with this stuff you know you build amps ...because you want to hot rod them so if you clone it won't you want to have you personal mods in there any how?

My point exactly :D

I just like the looks of the amp to tell the truth and I want to make an exact copy for myself for the amp collection. :D It may sound good or maybe not. I actually like the sound of the constellation better. Maybe my next build.
