I like JJs for output, but there are no current production 12AX7s I'd recommend.

What is the skinny on the Saratov?

Pretty much Mark - he's usually got a list of a handfull of things he has available. Helps to narrow it down to the type of tubes you are after in your initial email. Terry's a character, but knows his tubes and generally has some great stuff.

Or you email him, tell him what you want, and he'll tell you that it's a load of crap! I asked him about the Siemens E84Ls once, since there are always loads of these for sale and his answer was basically they'll last forever, which is unfortunate because you'll spend every day wishing they would die, or that you'd die, once you heard them!

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWeEnS0wsVo for an insight into his personality.

He's a great guy to deal with though, and I got my latest bullet-proof package from him safely the other day.

They are also just 6p14p, not 6p14p-EB, EV, EP or ER.
Just got a quad from him 2 days ago.

Mine are still on the way; looking for a reasonably-priced alternative/variation on JJs. For those of us unschooled (me included), what does that mean?

For some reason I always pictured Mr. Kilgore as an older gentleman.

He sure doesn't mince words does he?

Holy Shitaki Mushroom the Mullard 5AR4 is expensive...KCA NOS Tubes has lightly used for 85 bucks and others as much as $220 for 1960 NOS. What is the deal with center pin hole or large base? Is the real important?

Gearhead

The 6p14p are the standard Russian EL84's

The 6p14p-EB, 6p14p-EV are the Russian military EL84's

The E is - extended service life. (military)

The B is - increased reliability and mechanical ruggedness (such as low susceptibility to noise and microphonics). (military)

Been looking up the coding on them.....the EB and EV are the same and the EP and ER are the same.

Can't recall if I ran across what the "P" and "R" designate. But..........I'll keep looking.

The label OTK on the surface of the tube bulb means that
it is a Russian tube was gone under a military test.

Found this another site.

All these lamps have the identical characteristic. BUT.....Differ time of a life
6P14P - 3000hr
6P14P-V - 1000hr
6P14P-EV - 5000hr
6P14P-ER - >10000hr
6P14P-K - 3000hr and tube is steady against vibration!!!! This tube is very rare.
Also tubes 6P14P-EV and 6P14P-EB It is one type tube.

Gary,

Thanks for the information and your research on this. I am still not sure what I want at this time. I think my problem is my amp inventory has risen faster than my wallet so any purchase of expensive tubes is on the back burner until I build my Express.

$88.50 shipped and paypal'd. Lab screened for low noise and low microphonics, which is important in the Trainwreck builds. This is the tube KF used.

Also, have the 70's Russian made EL84 which were recommended by Allyn earlier in the thread which are defientaely different than the new ones.
