Trimmer in place of split load resistors?

Post by Normster »

Reading over a few threads, I decided to try the split load resistor on the third stage (per Paul Ruby). Anyway, in trying to dial in the split, I temporarily soldered in a 100k trimmer with the wiper going to the cap. Works so well that now I'm considering just leaving it. Any danger in doing this? (It's a 0.5 watt 15mm trimmer.)

Seems like 1/2 watt should be fine - you are replacing a 1/2 watt resistor. Looks like you have a mini-MV! Sounds like a good idea.

Keep in mind that a pot carrying DC current can get scratchy with time and will certainly make a loud whooshing sound when turned.

But, it is a great way to experiment with to see what values you actually like. Then you can implement the final result with a switch (even a rotary switch if you like a few settings).

Also, you'll get a pretty loud pop when switching. So, this is likely to be something you'll want to set-and-forget.

Let me make sure I understand this:
You have the 100K trimmer in place of the 100K plate resistor. One leg leads to B+, the other leg leads to the plate, and the wiper leads to the coupling cap?

Paul, it will most likely be a set-and-forget for now. If I find that there's a particular setting I like then I'll throw in the proper resistors.

Moorecowbelle, you got it. I'm just treating the trimmer like a split load resistor setup.

Dear Normster

This sort of thing is the mod that Brent Williamson was keen on prior to the whole TWreck page forming.

Let us know what results you get from this. I'm curious.

Thanks

just think of it as a volume control on the hot side, with the end of the pot going to AC ground instead of DC ground
