Cram 4 EL84 in a Liverpool combo? check layout

Post by soma_hero »

I'm building a Liverpool 2X12 inspired by Dana's amps, and I want to put in all four EL84s.

I have attached a pic of Dana's 15W combo, with some rearrangements. First the can caps will be moved to in between the preamp and power supply boards where they are normally. Then the extra space will be used to install 2 more 9 pin sockets for the extra 2 EL84s.

Will the proximity of the new tubes to the power supply section cause an issue with noise, hum, etc?

I can squeeze everything a little closer together towards the left side of the chassis, away from the power supply if I need more space. What do you all think?

Thanks,
Michael

Plenty of room in that chassis to do a full Liverpool. Go for it!

pretty sure that chassis is the same as the 18 watter in size. And graydon uses that same chassis for his 36 watter,4xEL84s.

You may be able to cram one el-84 in between the existing two and only move the interior cap can. I've never seen another amp with the output tubes as close as the LP & Rocket. He didn't have to do it that way.

I heard from a snow bird at the gas pump this afternoon you're enjoying 24" of snow and 5-7" or rain on the way. As much as i miss the wet sunshine, it's sure nice to have dry sunshine 360 days of the year. What part of soma seattle are you in? I grew up in Olympia.

Seattle proper only had about a foot over the holidays, but yeah up in the passes they got swamped!

It's started to rain pretty heavy lately, but comes with the territory. I live in the U-district right now, but work and play over on Capitol Hill. Music and bars there can't be beat.

I love hanging out in southern california for a week at a time but there's something about the people here that I just can't keep away from.

In poking around the 18watt site, I haven't found any pictures of a combo. I've read reference to combos and seen head units. The only layout over there is for the head unit, with tubes on the top of the chassis.

Do you know if Graydon makes his as a combo or head? If a combo is it tubes down or on the top of the chassis? I think I'll stick with tubes down since they'll be easiest to change and should get more airflow. Also won't have to worry about room inside above the speakers.

Hi Soma,
Not a layout but some clear picture of 36watt combo chassis here on the Ceriatone site:
