Re: Ginger Clone Project Progress (Completed!!!)
One thing I'm a little curious about with the Liverpool clone. Now the third grid leak resistor is 150K, does the amp now suffer from excessive bass as it did before?68k / .001 = 2341.7hz
68k /.0022 = 1064.4hz
68k /.0033 = 709.6hz
68k /.0047 = 498.2hz
100k / .001 = 1592.4hz
100k /.0022 = 723.8hz
100k /.0033 = 482.5hz
100k /.0047 = 338.8hz
150k / .001 = 1061.6hz
150k /.0022 = 482.5hz
150k /.0033 = 321.7hz
150k /.0047 = 225.9hz
When the amp originally used a 68K resistor and a 0.0047uF cap the roll off point was 498.2hz, when the value of the cap was decreased to 0.0022uF the roll off point was 1064.4hz, now the value of the grid resistor has been increased to 150K the roll off point is 482.5hz.
Have you also decreased the value of the capacitor again?
Just curious.
Yours Sincerely

Re: Original ginger Schematic ?
Most amp builders with original designs are not interested in selling their schematics. We end up peicing the schematics together from pictures or if we are very lucky, someone on the forum will actually get to look inside an original amp and write down what they see.ken wrote:The possibility also the original Schematic GINGER buying it will not be the bedspread?

Re: Ginger Clone Project Progress (Completed!!!)
DONT PANIC
I think bedspread might be layout?
68k /.0047 = 498.2hz
100k /.0033 = 482.5hz
150k /.0022 = 482.5hz
Would these three combinations sound the same?
The rolloff point would be very similar or the same,
but would mids and highs be affected by the different
size caps?

I have never tested the Liverpool with a 68k and .0047. Doug had mentioned that he had tried a .0033 and a 68k and he had went back to the ,0022 and 68k because he thought the .0033 was a little bassy in his amp. I started out with the 68k and (2) .001s in parallel for a .0022 which would put me at 1064.4 (which in my opinion had a nice Bass sound). I switched to the 150k and got more noticable gain and also picked up more bass with this configuration at 482.5. I havent decreased the cap yet. I think that in my mind the jury is still out on that one. For the short time I got to hear the amp at 150k, i liked what I heard and the extra bass could easily be rolled off another 6db with the Bass pot if needed. So to answer your question, I don't think the increased bass going from 68k/.0022 to 150k/.0022 could be called excessive bass. I was more interested in the increased gain.
Yes the combinations would sound the same except for increased gain using the larger resistors.JimiB wrote:DONT PANIC

The only affect to the mids and highs would be because of the increased gain using the larger resistors.

Dear Dana
Did yourself and Richie ever try out the 6.6K primary for the Liverpool?
If so what are your thoughts?
Look forward to hearing about it all.

Not yet! My son's band used it last weekend for practice and I will try and get it changed this weekend before they practice again so I can hear it with a band. His lead player kicked on the 1/2 power switch as he complained it was just too loud. So just when I thought the 1/2 power switch was useless, the first time I let someone use it that is the feature they went for. I'm thinking of putting a dummy load on the amp and lineing it out through their mixer to test the line out also. Might be cool to try and record that way. So many things to play with and so little time
I'll keep ya posted

Re: Ginger Clone Project Progress (Completed!!!)
I just finished the cab and speaker cab for my Liverpool. I tried to keep with the British flavor of the name liverpool and designed a Vox style head cab with a Vox style 4 x 12 cab. The cab is loaded with G12M25 Greenbacks. Nothing like waiting 5 months to get some cabs built for the Pool. If you guys haven't tried a Vox cab on your TW you don't know what your missing.
Re: Ginger Clone Project Progress (Completed!!!)
Nice set up there Dana!
Who built the cabs? Jeff Swanson? I love his work. He's building me a head cab for my Liverpool. He built me a nice closed back 2x12. How do the Greenbacks sound witht he Liverpool? Right now I'm using 2 V30's in a closed back cab & sounds pretty good. I tried the amp through my 2x12 open back with a Blue & G12H30 and thought that speaker set up was to bright for my tastes. I'm thinking the GB might bring it down even more (than the V30's).
I posted about this before, but my 'Pool does not have overwhelming bass, even when the bass controll is cranked. Would trying different values of c8 (currently .004 uf) and r7 (68k) give me a little more bass?
Just for reference my amp is built exactly the Mark Abbott's schematic. I'm using the 5200 primary as well. Any idea wht the effect of using the 6600 might sound like.
I really dig this amp and use an R9 Les Paul and an LP Special with P90's.
Thanks!

Re: Ginger Clone Project Progress (Completed!!!)
I built the cabs from scratch. The Greenbacks sound fantastic in the Vox 4x12 cab. This cab is a little smaller than a Marshall. I haven't tried mine through a 2 x 12 cab yet.fzfwyv wrote:Nice set up there Dana!

You might try changing the 68k to a 100k or 150k. What I did with mine was to get a 250k trim pot, replaced the 68k with the pot, and dialed in it where I liked it (Ala Dumble). If you don't find anything you like in that range you can then change the cap and try the range again. Retuning this circuit will definately give you more bass but if you go over 150k it starts getting mushy and your distortion will kick in a earlier and get nasty sounding. I haven't tried the 6600 yet but would think that 5200 would be closer to what the EL84 would want to see. A quad is usually ran at 4k in most EL84 amps.
Bridge or neck pickup on a LP sound awesome on the Liverpool.

Thanks Dana, you just gave me a "tuning project" this week. Should be fun.

Re: Ginger Clone Project Progress (Completed!!!)
Hey Dana,
Well, I had some time to experiment and ended up with a .0022 cap and a 100k resistor. In my amp, this gives me a little extra bass oomph while maintaining that clarity and tight bottom.
Man this amp rocks!
OK, next experiment is with the Greenbacks!
