Re: Liverpool distortion
If your amp sounds the same whether or not you have the presence wire connected you have a problem there. are the two 220k grid feed resistors grounded? It's hard to see what's going on in those pics but if your neg feedback won't connect you need to focus there for now.
Re: Liverpool distortion
Looks like it was the OT. Swapped in another which is not near the correct one but it sounds much better. Still had a squeal or two but i can deal with that and then upgrade caps ect. It was a solid tone. Its a shame because it really looked the right tranny for 4 el84s. I had the secondary black wire to ground and the green wire to the speaker. Could this be backwards or would that just change the phase if it were swapped.

Re: Liverpool distortion
Wow did I brain fart. It is an old style OT with cloth wires. Two white and one blue. Ohmed it out and realized I didnt have the center tap going to the B+. Thanks for holding my hand.

Re: Liverpool distortion
This amp rocks. I like the tube rectifier and it keeps the tubes a bit cooler. I play a lot of blues and like to be able to squish into a note. It hits me in places that only the misses and I know about. It seems a bit rawer and more aggressive than my Express. I will be tweaking and already put what pvc caps i had in it. I might leave the 150s in there that remain. It might be what is giving it the edge but it is probably the el84s. It sounds very fun and usable and is really pretty quiet. Thanks AMP GARAGE!

Allyn,
Sorry, late to the thread.
Are you using OD 225 or 6ps, same as they recommend in the dumbles? Mouser has the 225 as PETP. Just double checking the dumble guys say the 715 just don't sound right in those amps.
I thought most people building wrecks prefered the 150', but i'm sure Allyn wouldn't steer anyone wrong.
While I'm at it Omar had mentioned using Vishay/Dales on plates at one time, does this work for you too, or just carbon film?

Re: Liverpool distortion
Blinddog, I use Mallory PVC series OD's. They sound different than the PS or 715 series. Clear and warm. Carbon film on all preamp resistors.
Re: Liverpool distortion
The other ODs are not horrid, just different. The PVC are warm and clear while the 6PS series is a little grainy to me. Not bad at all, just a little flavor. I like 715P in certain circuits too, but are a bit brighter than the others.
