Rocket Clips - Another try
Here are a couple of rocket clips from my recent build.
Guitar is a LP, bridge pickup.
Speaker cab is a homebrew closeback with 2 Warehouse green berets - still pretty new.
I followed some of the advise given from my last effort and hopefully these are an improvement. Thanks for all the advise so far.
The clean clip highlights some intonation issues with the guitar but I still think its better than the previous stuff for showing what the amp sounds like.

Re: Rocket Clips
Its kinda wierd there seems to be an almost overbearing plate reverb sound on the 1st clip in particular..when you go to clean I can hear the amp jangle better but with the gain the reverb kinda over powers the clip..wonder if it is basement reverb or effect? Would love to hear it real dry.fishy wrote:Here are a couple of rocket clips from my recent build.
Vol is around 1/2, treble and cut are at 12 and the bass is rolled off to 9ish.

Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
They were my first attempt ever and so I was suprised I got anything done. We all have to start somewhere
My house tends to echo so maybe thats contributing. They were recorded straight but on different days and the mic was in a different place.
Thanks for listening and the feedback, I'll see if I can do some better clips.

Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
I ran into the same thing with my big basement when I 1st started trying to record stuff..I can hear nice gain characterists in the amp though..and when you clean it up some nice voxish jangle. I put the mic about 1" from the grill cloth on my cab ..back off the input gain on my board so as to not get distortion from my board....then I put a couch cushion behind the mic...seems to cut the reverb from the room down considerably.
Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
Cool. I'll see what I can do but it will probably be in a few days by the time I get to it.
Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
I like the second one alot!
The cleans on the first one i really liked too.
Fish, I have an idea, ship it out to my recording studio and I'll make a few clips. I'll only need it for a few years.
Then I'll get it right back to you.

If you can record 2 channels at once, do one close mic off the edge of the cone and an ambient in the middle of the room. Then mix to taste.
Eardrums!!! We don't need no stinkin' eardrums!
Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
I have tried to do some better clips and I have updated the clips at the beginning of the post.
Hopefully these illustrate the amp better and thanks for all the help.

Wow! Those clips sound a zillion times better! I really like the 3rd one..illustrates the string separation and chime..real nice! Sounds like you got an amp there..nice little bit of grit to it but not overpowering. Would like to hear a neck position or neck/bridge on a strat clip..bet that would sound killer! Good job!

The Raven approves! Those are some great clips and really show off the amp!
The first one reminds me a ton of early Steve Vai tone...like when he was with David Lee Roth.
The chime on the last clip you could almost sink your teeth into!
What's your recording setup by the way?
I have a Zoom H2 recorder I've been dabbling with, but between working on the house and just not being a very good player in general...I've got nothing to show for my time.

Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
what layout did you use for this amp? very nice clips
Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
Great clips Fish! I loved every one. Do you think a rocket may compliment my style of playing? It sounds to me like it could if I turned it up.

Its definitely a pretty cool amp and I am pleased I built one.
The perplexing thing is the Rocket is not supposed to have this much gain even when it is kranked. Not sure why this one does or if the other builds are similar. I get the impression they are gainier than they are supposed to be having read the posts.
At this point, I would probably say its safe to call it a rocket inspired amp.
It would be really nice to understand why there is a difference though:?

An old Korg I've had along time but never really used. Its before USB and built in CDRs so getting the files off is a pain. Closed mic'd with an SM58 I borrowed from a mate. What's your recording setup by the way?
It follows the layout posted in the files section as best I could. The other post has a few pics.what layout did you use for this amp?

It definitely does not have the gain of a Liverpool. You might want a pedal in front unless you want to krank it all the time. The heavier clip is pretty much kranked and my Liverpool still has it by a fair margin in that department. If you are out my way, your welcome to try it for yourself.Do you think a rocket may compliment my style of playing?

Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
Sounds great to me! I got my hands on a Rocket type build a few years ago and it had a decent amount of gain, but nothing like an Express or liverpool. What i found is that it had much less overall volume than either of the other two TW models, so it could be cranked w/o blowing eardrums.
Re: Rocket Clips - Another try
I think the rocket is quieter but is a little deceptive because it is still loud. Being cleaner but not bright seems to lull me a little. I played my rocket and then my Liverpool and was suprised how loud the rocket actually was.
Fortunately, my neighbors were out.
