First Time Express Builder, Easy Questions

Post by RockNRollDr »

Hello everybody, I have recently decided to build an Express and I am using schematic A1a on

http://www.schematicheaven.com/newamps/ ... xpress.pdf

and I have a few questions, how do you read the tube socket diagram, in other words how do you know which pins to solder to (I can read a schematic but am new to tubes). Also does anybody have any advice on transformers (where to get them, part numbers, cost). Any advice on either subject would be greatly appreciated, and would save me some time on research.

Thank You

hey rock ,that schematic does not have tube pin numbers on it some do,maybe you should get the tube diagrams for the tubes being used online they should have pinout numbers on there and use those against the schematic,as for transformers i used tranny's from tone slut and they sound good to me ,try duncan's amp pages for the tube info.

Hi Doc...I had to learn what the parts of the tube were and what they look like on a schematic. Then I used this diagram to get info on a specific tube....

Also remember that a 12AX7 is a dual triode, meaning that it contains two separate potential gain sections. In your diagram, the first two gain stages are in V1 (12AX7). The third gain stage is in contained in the second 12AX7 tube only uses 1/2 (or one) gain stage of the two (V2). The next set of triodes pictured together as two halves is used in the phase inverter section. Please don't be offended if you know this already.

Definately get your transformer set from "moose" here on this site. They are very good and the price is good. There are others sold here by other members and they are good as well.

Much more mulled over schematic and layout at:

https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=2930

Has pinouts.

Highly recommend the Toneslut trannies also:

http://www.toneslut.com/transformers/index.html

Also, highly, highly suggest using the search function. In finding an answer to any one question, reading the whole thread it's embedded in usually yields questions and answers to those questions you had never thought to ask.
